Clay,' son of President Kennedy's Biirlin adviser, Gen. Lucius' .). Clay, is.senior.adviser to the Vietnamese 7th Division which is responsible for the war'against ;he Communist Viet Cong in five provinces south of Saigon, He was wounded Wednesday when Viet Cong bullets shattered ie cockpit of the helicopter in which he was flying, Two weeks ago, during a similar operation against the guerrillas, Clay was nearly killed when a Cotmmunist .'bullet 'crashed through the plexiglass canopy of another, helicopter within inches of his head. During Wednesday's brisk action iigainst the Communists, three cither American officers riding in the same helicopter with Clay also were wounded, Clay said he and another U. S. military'adviser, Col. H. C. Blazzard, jumped into action early Wednesday with a company of Vietnamese troops near the village of N'han Ninh in Men Tuong Province, 50 miles south of Set gon. Set Trap For Reds Eight other companies of Viet- numesis troops, including civil guards and rangers, had been airlifted .around the edges of a wide area covered with flooded rice paddies, criss-crossed by canals, and obscured by fields of man high elephant grass. Object of the operation, Clay terly in the morning. The group met only light resistance but had to move slowly iecause of Viet Cong 'spike (raps and other "booby trap" devices, and thick. jungle growth which blocked the route. Clay said he stood on the edge of a rice paddy in the afternoon where he could see the action and "rubbed my hands with glee. They (the guerrillas) were moving right toward the regulars." the Viet Cong, ai> it-sensing the trap, suddenly turned west, Clay related, fleeing quiekly across canals and rice paddies. Climb Aboard 'Copter Clay and Blazzard climbed aboard one helicopter while a group of Vietnamese followed in a second to head off the Viet Cong for strafing from the air. The helicopters swung out in front of the Viet Cong and then roared back, slamming away at guerrillas from 38 caliber machine guns mounted in the exits. "The Viet Cong hit the ground and returned fire," ,-Clay said. Clay was in the cockpit directing the pilots, Capt. Robert Corneil and Chief Warrant Officer Benny Potts, when a bullet crashed through the plexiglass canopy with "an awful crack." Two more bullets crashed through the bottom and instruments of the helicopter, wounding Cornell in the foot,, and Potts in the chest. The round that hit Potts was spent. IJkzzard, standing behind Clay, was also hit by flying aluminum Loses Contract; Has 'Nice Meeting' With Governor INDIANAPOLIS (UPI)-Prinl ing company executive Kurford Danner described his meeting with Governor Welsh Thursday, as "very nice" even though his firm had 'just lost about $250,000 worth of state 'business to n competitor in Welsh's homctowni. Danncr, president of Bui-ford Printing Co., Indianapolis, went to see Welsh after his firm was disqualified in favor of Ewing Printing Co. of Vincennes for Hie bulk of $450,000 in contracts despite the fact Ewing bids were somewhat higher. Deputy administrator James Berg of the Department of Administration said Burtord failed to answer questions on the bid forms abou't checking with other customers, if c ;here had boon labor disputes and whether the firm was union or non-union. "We Made a mistake. We left out just three little words—yes, no and union," Danncr said. "But it was a very nke meeting with the governor."
