17 Eos Angeles SUnea HOWARD ROSENBERG SCHUBECK-ON THE ESC ARGOT BEAT Friday, February 19, 1982 Part VI TELEVISION THEME SONGS Mike Post night Show," where Johnny Carson joked, "Not only does Farrah Fawcett want half of everything, but Ryan O'Neal wants the other half." As it turns out, I was able to learn exclusively just how Schubeck was able to get that exclusive interview with Lee Majors. According to Channel 4 sources, Schubeck happened to be dining at the Studio City restaurant Tuesday night when he spotted Majors and Fawcett at another table and shrewdly called in a camera crew, hoping to report live with Majors for that night's newscast at 11. However, the plan went awry when Majors and Fawcett lingered too long over dinner, and the interview had to be held over for the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, waiting around at the restaurant for Majors caused Schubeck to miss anchoring the 11 p.m. Tuesday newscast. He was replaced by Kelly Lange, who reported that Schubeck was "on assignment." Working the escargot beat. The question is: How long can he keep it up? Can Schubeck of Hollywood continue the grind of hanging around posh restaurants hoping to grab a word with celebrities? He's a pro, of course. What does he make a year, For that kind of money, you expect them to be good.

The mind-melding Dr. William Rader, in his KABC-TV "Eyewitness News" series. "Forever Young." interviewed Dr. George Fischbeck about getting old, because everyone knows that weathercasting in the "volatile" Southern California climate can give you gray hairs. KNXT, meanwhile, treated viewers of a dinner -hour newscast to footage of a man leaping to his death from the Golden State Freeway.

But for sheer spunk, brass, verve, courage, fortitude and, yes, even chutzpah, absolutely nothing touched the Wednesday night performance of KNBC anchorman John Schubeck. If you were watching that evening's episode of NBC's "Quincy" about the evils of pollution, you saw Schubeck deliver a local news cut-in that included this scoop: "Lee Majors has decided to give the house to Farrah. We have an exclusive interview with Lee Majors at 11." You could almost hear Los Angeles gasp. Public TV's "MacNeilLehrer Report" had missed the story. Later that evening, ABC's "Nightline" foolishly squandered 30 minutes on troubled teens.

But Schubeck had come through. KNBC News has been known to do a tap dance now and then, but here was the old soft Schu at his best. He'd gotten a Lee Majors exclusive and you couldn't blame him for crowing. And they say most news anchors aren't journalists. Majors and Fawcett were not the lead story on KNBC Wednesday night.

That position 'went to the sniper murders in Chula Vista. Next came the murder arraignment of John Holmes, followed by an update on convicted murderer William Bonin, followed by a story about a poisoning murder, followed by the sentencing of Philip Bruce Cline for the Las Vegas Hilton fire, followed by an update on the discovery of some 500 fetuses in a Woodland Hills home, followed by news of an alleged paramilitary robbery ring. Softening us up for Lee and Farrah, huh? Half a dozen stories later, after hearing sports from Stu Nahan, the forecast from weathercastergame show host Pat Sajak and just as the tension was becoming unbearable we got to that exclusive about the Majors Fawcett divorce settlement. I taped the interview for posterity and here's the way it went. Schubeck's intro: "A camera crew and I last night met the divorced couple as they came out of a restaurant in Studio City.

The emotional three hours at least produced an agreement." Majors (after emerging from the restaurant): "Well, uh, we, uh, we met. We had a nice, uh, couple hours talk, reviewed 14 years of a nice relationship. Uh, and it came down to the fact that, uh, maybe I took some pressure off the judge. Schubeck: "With regard to the house?" Majors; "Because I made the decision to, uh, give her the house, because she deserved it." Schubeck's closing: "Farrah's been living in the house since they separated. She's there now.

As we understand it, the house is not really an outright gift, but some arrangement on finances the couple made later. The house itself was wanted by both. All in all, Schubeck wasn't a bad lead-in for "The To Theme from P.I. Here are the ratings for national prime-time television last week (Feb. 8-14), as compiled by the A.
