And what a full, remarkable life it was. Unfortunately, the movie doesn't do it justice.

Jean Stapleton struggles to etch a humanized portrait of the former First Lady, but the script (by Caryl Led-ner and Cynthia Mandelberg) does her in. For instance, there's a scene at the outset where Eleanor is confronted by her embittered daughter Anna (Gail Strickland) that sets off a spark of conflict, but it is never explored again. It's one of many examples of dramatic loose ends that are either extraneous to begin with or unresolved. Most of "Eleanor" is taken up with her appointment as a delegate to the United Nations, her conflicts with the crusty John Foster Dulles (E. G.

Marshall) and her championing of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. While her work there was important, Eleanor's behind-the-scenes negotiating and parlor diplomacy don't exactly make for scintillating drama. What's worse, while we see her at work, we're not given enough information about her as a person and what motivates her. The Eleanor here is the Eleanor of faded history books tall, erect and lifeless. John Erman directed.
