I I 1 1 DEMONSTRATOR CLEARANCE If you have to say it, say it. It's your job. But running people down makes me want to -Don, Coryell Coryell Says the Chargers Weren't So Bad After All By DAVE DISTEL, Times Staff Writer SAN DIEGO Don Coryell was in a strange mood, one which belied the fact that his Chargers beat the Oakland Raiders Monday night to win their third consecutive American Football Conference West championship. He had walked grim-faced, as he always seems to walk, through a fall filled with controversy and criticism. He was sensitive to what was being said, but his job was to coach and he adopted the role of innocent bystander as management and players and agents and even union leaders got into one fray after another.

And, of course, there was the criticism of the defense. This invariably struck more of a nerve, because it hit more directly at his coaches and his players. Tuesday, after the Chargers came out the other end of their obstacle course with a championship, Coryell was a bit more defensive than his team was on occasion this fall. "I'm satisfied to have come through all this adversity," he said. "Most of it was really built up by the press.

I'd like to be able to keep the team in a vacuum, maybe live here with us so they don't read the paper or listen to newscasts or listen to people in the street." If the Chargers had been living at the stadium, they would have been shielded from the fact that John Jefferson was missing, Fred Dean was unhappy, John Jefferson was traded, Fred Dean was traded, John Jefferson said that others wanted out (of their stadium apartments or the Ed Garvey ordered Dan Fouts suspended and some folks thought the defense was of the greatest annoyance to Coryell. "We've had so many doggoned distractions and problems," he said, addressing a weekly media luncheon. "Maybe some of our people got immune to criticism I read where we have defensive players who aren't capable of playing. If you have to say it, say it. It's your job.

But running people down makes me want to vomit." Coryell was obviously not enjoying the luncheon. "Our guys have pulled together," he said, "because they're real men. The defense did very, very well holding Oakland to 10 points, holding them in critical situations. They played their hearts out." The defense, in fact, has played well since that 44-23 debacle in Seattle in a Monday night game. "Anybody who thinks we went up to Seattle and didn't play hard has their head in the ground," Coryell said.

"I could use stronger words. We didn't lay down. We played hard and they played better. They beat us bad." On what was obviously not Media Appreciation Day, Coryell began his lecture with a suggestion for recommended reading. It was an article in The Times about Miami Coach Don Shula.

He addressed the subject of parity vs. mediocrity, a subject which nettles most NFL coaches. "We have teams 9-7 and 10-6 winning division championships," Coryell said, "but, believe me, it's not because of mediocrity. How or why anyone got that opinion I don't understand. It used to be there were just a few good teams.

A lot of the others were mediocre and some poor. We played one last night. I think Oakland's a great football team. If you don't think so, line up nose to nose against them when they're mad at you." Oakland, to be accurate, finished the season 7-9 as a result of the loss to the Chargers. Indications are that the Raiders will not be in the playoffs. The 8-8 teams were Pittsburgh, Washington, Detroit and Green Bay, none of which will be in the playoffs.

Coryell did not specify which of them were the great ones. Coryell was right in one regard. Teams with lower degrees of greatness can step up and ruin a season for the great ones. Presumably, that was what happened Sunday when the Lesser Great Chicago Bears beat, the Greater Denver Broncos, 35-24, to open the playoff door for the Chargers. "It was a great (That word again?) sigh of relief to have a second chance," Coryell said, "and for our guys to come through and win.

It was a tremendous achievement to win our division, though other people may not think that. And we've won it three years in a row." And so the Chargers will be in the Orange Bowl Jan. 2 to play the Miami Dolphins, who won the championship of the AFC East. "We hope we have lucky breaks," said Coryell. "It's going to be very difficult, but our people are fired up.

They know they'll have to play flawless ball and be very, very determined to have a chance and beat Miami back there." Miami, being the winner of a division with three playoff teams, must rate quite high on the greatness scale. However, some have described the Dolphins as No-Names. "They are not a mediocre team," Coryell said. "Anyone who calls them No-Names hasn't played them.
