A tale of faith and persecution, of martyrdom and endurance. A year ago this month, three North American Mary-knoll nuns Maura Clarke, Ita Ford and Dorothy Kazel and Jean Donovan, a lay missionary, were murdered in El Salvador. A half-hour documentary, "The Seeds of Liberty," produced by Maryknoll World Films and airing on KCET's "Presente" tonight at 9:30 on Channel 28, highlights the civil conflict that cost the nuns their lives. In a series of interviews with principals in the strife, the scope of El Salvador's problems are laid out. But much of what is said is now too familiar and the points of contention so well-known that the viewers' attention may wander.

Some needed dimension is added by the documentary's portrait of the church's role in that tiny, torn country, of its commitment to the victimized. A breath of freshness, an unsettling stir of Christianity wafts through the presentation in interviews with Maryknoll nuns, including Ita Ford, and with prominent Catholic archbishops in both El Salvador and the United States, including the late Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero. There are also remarks by their beleaguered parishionersmany of whom are now refugees. However, the film misses the opportunity to do more with church figures. Although narrator Sister Peggy Healey states that the decision to focus on the people of El Salvador instead of on the nuns was a deliberate one, it was a mistake.

The film does not add fresh understanding of the situation in El Salvador. It would have gained by including vignettes of a typical day in the life of the nuns, showing what motivated them to remain there even when it became dangerous to do so. Or by telling more about Romero's growth from a conservative religious traditionalist to an outspoken opponent of his government.
