He'd never even seen me play ball, I was overweight and he still had confidence in me. Made me really want to try.

"He's never told me a lie in 3V years. If he had to tell me a lie, he wouldn't tell me anything." Mulligan on Magee: "He was never a problem. He's a great kid. When he first got here (Southern California), he never used to talk and was fat. I had the track coach working with him and he (track coach) came up to me and said 'I think you better lay off, he's getting ready to And Magee did for about a week.

Then he came back for good. "I was a baby," Magee said. "My mother spoiled me. I was used to having my own way." No longer. "He's the first guy at team meetings, at all team functions," Mulligan said.

"It's like he's on Marine time. He's never missed practice. Everybody likes him. You can be the star much easier if people on the team like you than if you're a jerk. It's easier for the players to throw the ball to you.

Of course, if they don't throw him the ball, we don't let them play." And when they pass it to Magee, he's not expected to pass back. He had only seven assists all last season. But then, at this level of competition, it makes no sense to have Magee give up the ball. Says Irvine guard Randy Whieldon, a Magee teammate at Saddleback: "He's friendly, he's not conceited. Ycu always want to be with him.

Everybody was kind of scared of him at first. He had a big Afro then and he looked mean. But once you got to know him, you know he wouldn't hurt anybody." Mulligan: "He's a loner, more than any player I've ever had. He gets along with everybody, but doesn't hang around with anybody. When we go on the road, most of the players ask for certain guys to room with.

He never does." If Magee had a rooming choice, it just might be Mulligan. Magee loves it that they can talk for hours without ever discussing basketball. They also had a chemistry on the court. Saddleback lost only two games in Magee's 1V seasons there, and after 1980 both he and Mulligan were in great demand. Mulligan was leaning toward taking the job at Irvine, and he gave Magee the old "we can turn the program around" pitch.

Magee wasn't so sure. "He wanted to go to (Cal State) Fullerton," Mulligan said. "Because it was easier. They had a PE (physical education) major." "I didn't figure I owed him anything," Magee said, "but it would have been wrong for me to go somewhere else when he had done so much for me. I didn't have to go through any head games.

I know what this guy's all about." So Mulligan went over to Magee's girlfriend's apartment, they emptied a six pack, and Magee signed a letter of intent. At Irvine, which has a strong academic reputation, Magee gets mostly Cs, and a "every other leap year." He's majoring in social ecology. "Every body asks me what it is," Magee said. "I don't know what it is." The basketball court is less of a mystery. As fast as any big men around, Magee runs the middle lane on the fast break, Irvine's staple.

His coaches say he's a great outside shooter to 24 feet," Livsey says), a talent for which he has little need as long as he can muscle inside, but one that'll be handy in the NBA. He also has good hands and seems to hang in the air on his turnaround jumper, a la Elgin Baylor. Irvine is undefeated in five starts this season and Magee is averaging 31 points and 11.6 rebounds. His field goal percentage is 73.9. And he even has 4 assists.

How would Magee stop Magee? "Don't let me get the ball," he said. "Because if I get the ball, I'm going to score. There's no doubt about it." Mulligan agrees when an observer likens Magee to Spencer Haywood in his prime, except that Magee's outside shooting and attitude are better. "He'll bust his ass for somebody," Mulligan said. "He'll play hard.

And he'll listen." "If the coach wants me to score just six points, I'll score just six points," Magee said. "I've learned that if you listen to your coach, things go easier. You survive." Magee is an indifferent practice player, but games are another story. Coaches always use the same word in describing his play: He dominates. The NBA, of course, is another thing.

But Magee can't wait to try it. That's what motivated him to get off the assembly line, out of Ina Mae's house, and back to college. That's what motivated him to begin his California odyssey, and to get up at 5:30 a.m. this spring. That's why there's no turning back now.

When he talks about Billy, tears come to his eyes and, sometimes, he has to stop for a tissue. When Billy was born, the Mulligans were told he'd be a vegetable, that they should put him in a home. "We couldn't do that," Mulligan said.

"He was ours. And California is the best place to raise a handicapped child. The climate is right and the facilities are super." So Billy two normal brothers, Mulligan and wife Dorothy were committed to California. Job offers came and went. And Billy grew up.

When Billy was 15, he was mainstreamed into a regular high school in Riverside. Mulligan finally did make a move soon after to Saddleback. But a San Clemente high school didn't want Billy. "We almost had to go back," Mulligan says, "but we finally convinced them to take him." Mulligan accepted a job at Loyola Marymount, then turned it down. He didn't think Billy should move again.

But two years ago, Billy was ready to go to college. And Mulligan was ready to make a move. "Everybody thought I was going to Fullerton," Mulligan says. "Which is probably why I went to Irvine." Billy has had a profound effect on his father. "He has an effect on everyone who comes in contact with him," Mulligan says.

But Mulligan couldn't be a normal basketball coach, or even a normal father. He regrets that his other two sons may have suffered some as Mulligan split time between coaching and Billy. It is 5-0 this season and people are starting to pay attention.

And, yes, Mulligan's doing it his way the way he did it for years while coaching at Riverside City College and Saddleback and even back at Long Beach Poly: with the firm belief that the best defense is a good offense. Most teams who run work for the 15-foot jump shot or the layup. His teams hold up and shoot from 25." The Anteaters, who always run, will most of the time shoot, too. That's the way Mulligan likes it.

But is it coaching? "You look at a guy who holds the ball," Mulligan says, "and people say he's coaching the hell out of the team. A guy like me, they say I just roll the ball out in the middle of the floor and let them play. It's harder to coach a fast-break team because you're less in control of what's happening on the floor." It's no coincidence that Mulligan is committed to a philosophy of wide-open play. It reflects his life perfectly. "He's the typical Irishman cliche, fiery," says UC Santa Barbara Coach Ed DeLacy, once a Mulligan assistant.

"He lives on the edge of excitement. I can't imagine Bill retiring. Except maybe to be a gambler in Vegas or a stunt pilot. I can never picture him in a rocking chair." When he was a football coach at Long Beach Poly, his teams scored 40 points a game. They ran every trick play, from the triple reverse to the no-huddle offense.

He chose between coaching football and basketball when USC offered him an assistant basketball job in 1964. He left a couple of years later to coach at Riverside and then on to Saddleback, going 332-118 along the way. His teams never won fewer than 18 games and, naturally enough, Mulligan was usually mentioned when a head coaching job came open at a Division I program. An admittedly ambitious man, Mulligan turned down all offers. His Son, the Sportswriter For Mulligan is more than a basketball coach.

And more than a quick-tempered coach given to short-lived bursts of anger whose star player says of him, "He's like a father to me. I love him." He's also the father of three sons, the oldest of whom, Billy has cerebral palsy, a disease of the central nervous system. Billy can't talk and can't walk, but he's a sophomore at Cal State Fullerton and, of all things, a journalism major. "He's got a sports column," Mulligan says, "called Hell on Wheels."
