"Wait, I'll say it this way. We'd have worked out a lot." Magee's detractors, whose number is dwindling, sometimes question his ability because of the caliber of his competition.

UC Irvine is in only its fifth year in NCAA Division I. It's primarily a commuter school with a high school-size gym (Crawford Hall seats no basketball tradition, and mostly plays schools that nobody east of Las recalled. "I could go out there with ease and score 30." Colleges recruiters came but Magee, something of a mama's boy, wanted to stay close to home. He chose Southeastern Lousiana, 40 miles away. Still he was homesick and came home every day.

He came home for good after three months, before basketball practice even started. Next stop: the University of Houston. He stayed three weeks. Same story. "I wasn't ready to go to school either time," Magee said.

"The coach gets you there and then you're on your own." At home, he worked on the assembly line at a textile mill, pushing lumber through a ripsaw for $2.35 an hour. Thanks to beer and mama's cooking, he was soon looking more like the Pillsbury Doughboy than a power forward. But his shooting touch never vanished. The late Jack Holly, then coach at College of the Ozarks in Clarks-ville, persuaded Magee to try out. Holly liked Magee, but Magee didn't like the school.

So Holly told Magee about a friend of his in California, Saddleback Coach Bill Mulligan. Magee headed West. And the rest, as they say, is a neat little bit of history. Magee was overweight (255 at one time) and taciturn, but Holly had advised the boisterous, balding, bushy -browed Mulligan that Magee would be well worth some extra-tender loving care. Magee had a sister in Oceanside, but no other friends or family.

Not that Mulligan had to phony up to Magee. Mulligan's as warm as a mother's hug. Magee didn't live with him, but Mulligan became his surrogate father. Magee on Mulligan: "He's a down-to-earth guy. A lot of coaches, they like a player just because he's got good playing They don't want to have anything to do with you off the court.

He'll act the fool (joke around) off the court, but on the court, he's in charge. But the dreariness of Eastern Europe seemed long ago and far away as Magee lunched with a reporter on the Irvine campus. While he ate a cheeseburger, hot dog, and cheesecake, Magee's eyes gazed appreciatively at the passing coeds. "They've improved on the girl situation since last year," he said. And Magee is trying to improve, too. Though he's never before pushed himself in the offseason, this spring Magee and teammate Rainer Wulf lifted weights and ran daily from a.m.
