'f amumt in IDII.IM.IJJI-UIIIIL.IU Continued from First Page shoulder injury in the third quarter, figured out early in the game where the single coverage was going to be. "He found it," Buchanon said. "It was me. Anderson did a good job reading the defense." It was not particularly surprising that the Chargers would have chosen Curtis to single-cover. The Bengals' big receiver thus far had been rookie Cris Collinsworth, and the chief secondary receivers had been the tight ends.

"Most balls had been going to Collins-worth," Curtis said. "We thought they'd double-cover him. I don't think we expected I'd be single-covered as much as I was." Ironically, Curtis, a nine-year veteran, caught his touchdown pass in a crowd. It was the Bengals' first touchdown and came on a little four-yard toss. "A lot of people were there," Curtis said.

"I don't know how he got it in there." That touchdown was typical of the way the Bengals were to score all day. Charger turnovers preceded five of the seven Cincinnati scores, and 30 of the 40 points. And Louis Breeden always seemed to be the man on the spot. His fumble recovery led to a 24-yard march to the first Bengal touchdown and his second interception of the game turned the ball over to Anderson and Co. for a 65 -yard drive to a fourth -period field goal.

In between was the interception. This was the play that deflated Charger hopes of rallying and getting back into the contest. Fouts had passed for 56 yards to Dwight Scales at the Bengal 4 with 49 seconds to play in the first half. Cincinnati led, 24-7, but a touchdown would make a game of it. Fouts went with a quick pass in the direction of Charlie Joiner and of Chandler, who had fallen down.

Breeden stepped in and made the interception two yards deep in the end zone, got a block from Wilson Whitley to escape Joiner's grasp and fled down the left sideline to the touchdown. "A mind blower," Chandler said. "A real mind blower." "It was a 14-point play," Fouts said. "That's all." Instead of being down maybe 24-14, the Chargers found themselves down, 31-7. Rolf Benirschke got a 47-yard field goal as the half ended, but that was not exactly the brass ring on the merry-go-round.

Many defensive backs, in Breeden's situation, would have been content to down the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. "Because it was such a quick play," Breeden said, "I didn't think the offense would have time to recover. No way I was going to stay in the end zone." What were his responsibilities on the play? "We were in zone-man, and we disguised it very well," he said. "I don't think Fouts read the coverage very well." Breeden came out a hero in the end, but his battle with Chandler and, indeed, Fouts was not all that one-sided. Chandler caught 10 passes for 194 yards, one a 51-yarder for the game's last touchdown.

Only five times in Charger history has a receiver caught passes for as many yards, and, in each case, the receiver's name was Lance Alworth. Chandler, however, was not talking like a man who had any sort of a memorable day. "That," he said, "is what I call a bad day at the office." As Dwight Scales, who had three receptions for 102 yards, said: "It don't mean bleep when you lose." Cincinnati's defense was able to come up with the big plays because of the consistent pressure on Fouts. The Charger quarterback, who passed for 352 yards, likes to release the ball quickly, but not quite as quickly as the Bengals were forcing him to release. "They did some things similar to what Chicago did," Fouts said, "but a few teams are doing that." How is the hard rush to be countered? 4 PATRICK DOWNS Los Angeles Times Bengals' running back Archie Griffin tries to hurdle past Chargers' Woodrow Lowe.

New technique breaks the vicious circle of chronic pain often "I think we ran extremely well," Fouts said. "You can usually sweep pretty well. You count on them not having support outside." Chuck Muncie carried 17 times for 90 yards and James Brooks carried four times for 45 yards, but Cincinnati's big lead made it considerably less efficient for the Chargers to stay on the ground.

Forced to the air, the Chargers had to play the type of offense Cincinnati wanted them to play. The Bengals brought in the five-man front and supported that with the blitz. "We thought maybe they might use some five-man line," said Charger guard Ed White, "but we didn't anticipate they'd do it as much as they did. They covered all our linemen, and then came with the blitz." To handle the blitz, the Chargers had to keep running backs in the backfield to help protect. This took away some of those little screens and swing passes they like so much, and running backs Muncie and Brooks caught only one pass apiece.

"We're not really a blitzing ballclub," Breeden said, "but Fouts is a rhythm passer who likes to drop back six or seven yards and release. He can kill a secondary if you don't keep a hand in his face. This was the biggest game of our season as far as the defense was concerned. We had to play our best game, and we did. We won the game because the defense turned the ball over." Breeden's fumble recovery was the first turnover, and came after Ken Riley and Bobby Kemp hit Joiner in the secondary after a reception.

Cincinnati moved to a 17-7 lead on a couple of lengthy drives after punts, and then pulled away when the parade of turnovers began: i associated with: fear, anxiety 8 depression Bo Harris forced a Fouts fumble on a sack, and Reggie Williams recovered. A Charles Alexander touchdown followed, and it was 24-7. Breeden's 102 -yard return, tying an unofficial NFL record, made it 31-7. Breeden intercepted a Fouts -to -Chandler pass in the end zone, and another field goal made it 34 -10. Rick Razzano's hit and Don Bass' recovery of a Brooks fumble on a kickoff return set up the final touchdown, a two-yarder by Pete Johnson.

The Chargers managed to amass 447 yards against a Bengal defense that surrendered both big plays and little plays but came up with the biggest plays itself. Needless to say, the Bengal locker room was somewhat jubilant. It is as though this team expects to be on top of its division, even though it was 14-34 for the previous three seasons. "We're just happy to be ahead," said Browner, "but two games ahead is a great feeling. They have to catch us now." Eddie Edwards, Browner's sidekick in the defensive line, came over from his locker and yelled: "We now control our own destiny." The same night be said of the Chargers, though maybe not quite with as much enthusiasm.

"This team's been through an awful lot," White said. "The season in general has been full of trying and stressful things, but we're still in the thick of it." They were blown out of a game Sunday, but not out of the race. American and Two Others Disqualified for Doping CALCUTTA, (JP Three competitors of the World Powerlifting championships, including an American, were stripped of their medals Sunday and disqualified from competition for a year on charges of taking performances-bettering drugs. Nevertheless, the championship team title was won by the United States for the fifth consecutive year. The Americans have lost the international title only once since the championships first began in 1971. International Powerlifting Federation Vice President Manojit Bose of India, announcing the disqualifications, said dope tests conducted Friday on Joe Bradley of the United States, Japan's Hiroyuki Isagawa and Kullervo Lampela of Finland were found positive. The doping disqualifications left the U.S.
