At the very least, the hour would raise the consciousness level of "60 Minutes" and make Mike, Morley, Harry and now Ed and their many field producers even better journalists as they go about keeping this CBS magazine show among the Nielsen ratings elite. Right? Well, maybe. A Mike Wallace segment on Sunday's show, the Nielsen leader for the week, dealt with a strike at the Tennessee Nuclear Specialties (TNS) plant in eastern Tennessee making anti-tank penetrator shells from uranium for the Air Force. The striking workers claim the plant is hazardous and overexposes them to radiation.

Here is most of Wallace's brief interview with a former plant janitor who quite possibly was unsophisticated about the cameras. Wallace: "Albert Patton worked at TNS as a janitor for 6V years. He learned that he had leukemia this summer. Do you think it has anything to do with working at TNS?" Patton: "Well, I don't know that. I wouldn't say." Wallace: "Why wouldn't you say?" Patton: "I don't know why.

I could be wrong either way. I could say yes. I could say no." Wallace: "Well, what's your hunch? I mean, just between you and me, what's your hunch?" Just between you and me? Fifty million viewers are looking in and Wallace tells the man it's between the two of them? A secret? Patton finally told Wallace on camera that he did feel that his leukemia was related to his plant job. What we'll never know is whether Patton thought he was telling Wallace that in confidence, after being pressed to do so. Regardless, it appeared to be an underhanded approach to interviewing by Wallace.

'MASTERPIECE' GETS FORD'S 'GOOD SOLDIER' "The Good Soldier," the two-hour film adaptation of Ford Maddox Ford's novel, has been acquired by "Masterpiece Theater." The dramatization of Ford's novel traces the unusual relationship between two wealthy, turn -of-the -century couples one British, the other American who meet yearly in the fashionable German spa town of Bad Nau-heim. Starring in the Granada Television production are Jeremy Brett and Susan Fleetwood as Edward and Len-ora Ashburnham, the British; Robin Ellis and Vickery Turner as John and Florence Dowell, their American friends, and Elizabeth Garvie as Nancy.

As the story progresses, deceit, hatred, infidelity and betrayal emerge to belie the surface propriety of the pre-World War I society in which they live. en Annual rate of interest on Term Investment Certificates SCHILLER Continued from Page 7 shoes and gingham dresses is torn between her attractions to the son and the stern dictates of the community.
