The 49-year-old longtime friends insist he's 52-showed his pending "retirement" may be several years, instead of months, away by batting 1000 at Tanforan yesterday, with four winners out of as many mounts. His perfect day al made him the first rider to win four races in a single day at the meeting. His most important triumph came in the featured St. Calatine purse in which he guided Neil McCarthy's Seaneen under the wire in near track record time. The 5-year-old son of Royal Charger turned the six furlongs in 1.09 just one tick removed from the mark of 1.09 set on October 25, 1954 by Karim.

Tyhawk, holder of the world's record of 1.14 for six and one- half furlongs, forced Seaneen to run his very best race to get the job done. He led from the start to about five jumps from home, where Jolinny finally managed to get up on the outside with his fully extended mount. Sir Ruler was a well beaten third, four lengths back. Favorite in the wagering, Seaneen returned $3.40 to win. It was the first victory in six starts this year for the handsome chestnut Irish bred, who scored his most important victory last summer at Hollywood Park in the $100,000 added California stakes, in which he decisively defeated the great Round Table.

Longden's other winning mounts were Rosy Turf at $6.80 in the first, Royar Run at $13.20 in the Spark man Scores Hole-in-One Here Ted Sparkman of 222 El Camino Real, Redwood City, scored a hole-in-one on the 150-yard seventeenth at muni links here this morning. Purse S3500. )anecn. 119. Longden 3.40 2.60 2.1i New Hope in Dodger Camp (Continued from Page 19) Reese folded, and turned in a creditable performance. If Lillis can fill the bill at shortstop, Zimmer will probably be shifted to third base.

Right now Junior Gilliam is the third sacker, with long ball hitting Dick Gray in reserve. The switch hitting Gilliam is irvaluable because he can fillin anywhere in the infield and in the outfield. He could, in fact, wind up as the regular left fielder, providing Lillis plugs the hole at short. Everyone in camp is high on John Roseboro, who was brought along too quickly as the club's number one catcher. A rugged left handed swinger, Roseboro still needs to learn a lot about the art of catching.

He hit .271 last year, and the Dodgers feel he will develop into one of the best hitters in the NL in time. Backing up Roseboro is Joe Pignatano, a good receiver but no threat with the bat. Pitching is again a big question mark for the Dodgers, although optimism is high. Don Drysdale (12-13) and Johnny Podres (13-15) could rank with the best right-left pitching combinations in the league. Last year Drysdale finished well after getting off to a miserable start.

Podres was unbeatable in the L.A. coliseum, but couldn't get anyone out on the road. If they both put things together, the Dodgers will be set on the mound. Drysdale, in particular, has been sharp in the Grapefruit circuit. The Dodgers have always had a number of young pitchers who carried the "can't miss" tag but never live up to expectations, but this year may be the exception.

Stan Williams, a young right bander who won nine while losing seven, and Sandy Kouvax, a lefty who slipped to 11-11 after a fast start, are being groomed for regular turns. Both can throw as bard as anyone in the league. Backing up the front liners are Fred Kipp (6-6), Danny McDevitt (3-6) and Car! Erskine (4-4). Clem Labine, at one time the best relief pitcher in the business, will head an imposing bullpen crew if he regains his touch. Veteran Johnny Klippstein (6-7) and Don Bessent (1-0) are others tabbed for relief duty.

A capsule summary: Pitching--Potentially sound, although same staff was mediocre last year. Catching--In trouble if Roseboro doesn't pan out. Infield--Shaky on left side, strong or. right side. Outfield--Only average, unless Snider plays back to banner years.

Power--Everyone's a potential Ruth at coliseum; not so imposing on road. Bench--Thin but talented. Finish--Fifth. Every 70lh WANT During April in the SAN MATEO TIMES in of our 70th anniversary DI 3-1831 CALL Private individual. EM 9-1791 -V TO VHO.M IT MAT CONCERN I IS I a on A I 21.
