KEAR Will Be Just a Memory By BOB FOSTER This week the report we carried in this column last week, that had been leased to BartelTBroadcasters was confirmed Steve Cisler, president of the station. In confirming our story, Cisler said that the annual rental on the was to be year for five years, with adoption to purchase the station outright at the end of the lease penod. At that time Bartell Broadcasters will purchase the station for $125,000. This will give Ciskr a cool in years, far more than and. his "good music" stockholders could possibly have realized.

The call letters of the 10,000 watt AM station win be KACE, with the letters KEAK-FM being adopted by FM station KXKX, now located on Twin Peaks. The call letter KXKX mil be dropped. The unhappy news rf course is word from Bartell Broad- casters that they will drop the "good music" policy and make the station a popular music station. Cisler told us last week while we were trying to get this out of him, that he would probably move the FM station's transmitter site to Mount Diablo or M6unt San Bruno and increase the power of the operation. "We'll continue the good music from the FM operation," explained.

He went on to say he'd experiment with jnultiplex- (broadcasting more than one program at a time from one If the FCC gives its blessing to this lease deal, the new operators will take over either June 1 or July 1. The demise of this music" station, created some nine years ago by The Times with KSMO, will be mourned by many a '-'good" music listener. Actually, the programming for the past several years has been a once high level, certainly since the move to San, Francisco. The station has had nothing but problems almost from the day Cisler took it over some four or five years ago. Money problems have plagued the station with sponsors staying away in droves.

The top names which once worked for the station found greener and less hectic announcing jobs, leaving the station with new names and different programrcsng concepts. Had it not been for devoted classical music fans who dug down their pockets to keep'the station on the air a couple'of times, music might have, disappeared from'the station several ago. It is needless to say, had Cisler decided to go pops several years back he might be still running the station, and profitably, too. After all there is no other independent station in. the air with 10,000 locally.
