Video Tape To Give Local TV Big Boost TIMES TV LOG San Mateo Times--25 By Walt By BOB FOSTER Despite the fact that tape recording has become the foundation of'the'radio industry and to some extent actually helped in the demise of-radio as the major entertainment medium, we can see that'happening with video tape, as developed recently by Ampex in Eedwood City. An outstanding example of how video tape recording will be able to enhance local television programming can be seen with tne farseeing plans of KRON-TV. Last week KRON-TV announced the purchase of two such video tape recorders for delivery early next year. This(equipment, which will cost the station between $100,000 and $150 000, will not only make It possible for KRON-TV to do more local programming, but permit it to do more remotes and on the spot coverage. In fact it could actually permit tremendous latitude 3n programming the station throughout the day.

Next week Harold P. See, general manager of the station, will discuss its plans for using the tape at a special conference. we talk with Harold, we can see great possibilities in the station owning the equipment. It may be within the realm of possibility to install a piece of tins equipment in a remote truck. This would give the station a great deal of latitude in the covering of spot news and special events, of having to wait hours for processing of film, as is done now, a picture could be shot of a major fire, recorded right in the truck and before the truck even left the scene, tapes could be rushed to the studio and played immediately.

The eight-hour day for station people could and probably will become a reality. By producing local television programs on a. regular schedule during eight-hour day, five-day week, KRON-TV will be able-to use their crews to far greater advantage: The effect of this purchase of VTR (video tape recorders) by KRON-TV will be very great on the viewing public, especially when they as a group realize that the picture quality of VTR is just as good as live quality. We'll be interested in what Harold See has to. say about his station's plans for the use of It could easily add a whole new concept to local programming and for the better.

REAR, wlhich originally went on the air as KSMO, the station of The Times, will be leased to the Bartell Broadcasters of Wisconsin. The call letters will be changed and the programming format will be changed also. Reports from the Midwest indicate- that the station will go "pops." The deal, according to our Midwestern informant, calls for the station to be leased from Steve Cisler, present owner, for a period of five years, with an option to buy. The KEAR call letters will be dropped, but will be retained for FM station KXKX which currently has been broadcasting KEAR program. Cisler will retain operation of the FM station.

According to our informant, Bartell Broadcasters, headed by Gerald A. Bartell, president, currently operate WMTV (TV), Madison, Wisconsin, WOKY, AM and TV, Milwaukee and WAPL, Appleton, plus a San Diego station. Television's professional gloom spreaders were unanimous that NBC's decision to adapt Sinclair Lewis' "Dodsworth" for television was a mistake. It will turn but to be a "musty old effort" that the modern generation will never accept, they screamed. The gloom boys didn't figure on the acting of two fine screen stars cast in the lead roles.

Frederic March, who never gives a bad performance, and lovely Claire Trevor, who has few poor performances to her credit, took this drama and gave it- new life. The writing by David Shaw and the direction of Alex Segal, combined with this great acting ability possessed by March and Miss Trevor to make "Dodsworth" on "Producers last Monday night one of the highlights of the show's current run. When Lewis penned "Dodsworth," American life was quite different, but the character types he depicted have been with us for centuries, and always will be. March as the auto magnate, Sam Dodsworth, happy with his own way of life, his family and friends, and Miss Trevor as his wife Fran Dodsworth, who desperately fights off old age, are not unusual characters; the world is filled with The play, beautifully fitted into the 90-minute forrrat, reveals how the husband fights to keep things the way they were, and how the wife not only loses her sense of values but her husband as well. Geraldine Fitzgerald'as the understanding other woman, who comes to March when all seems to be lost, and Robert Boon as Kurt, the impoverished nobleman who seeks only a fortune, were cleverly cast and rewarded with outstanding performances.

As a television play "Dodsworth was an outstanding bit of television, despite its early viewing time and the fact that the story was written'more than 30 years ago.
