In 1798 Napoleon Bonaparte won the Battle of the Pyramids. In 1856 the Illinois Central Railroad began operating, wood-burning trains on its lakefront line in Chicago. In 1861 the Confederates won the first Battle of Bull Run near Manassas, in the Civil War. In 1919 the Goodyear blimp Wing Foot Express caught fire 1,500 feet over Chicago's Loop and crashed into the Illinois Trust Savings Bank; 13 people were killed and 28 injured. In 1925 John Scopes, a Dayton, biology teacher, was found guilty of teaching the theory of evolution, contrary to state law.

In 1930 the Veterans Administration was established. In 1949 the Senate ratified the North Atlantic Treaty by a vote of 82-13. In 1954 the armistice for Indochina was signed in Geneva, whereby France evacuated North Vietnam and the communist Viet Minh evacuated South Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. In 1973 France exploded a nuclear device on Mururua Atoll in the South Pacific despite worldwide protests. In 1975 the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz 19 landed safely, four days after an orbital rendezvous with the crew of the U.S.

spacecraft Apollo. Apollo and Soyuz spent 44 hours linked in space, while astronauts performed five joint experiments and shared meals. In 1976 Vietnam agreed to allow all Americans stranded in the country since the end of the war to leave and take Vietnamese family members with them. On the same day, the British ambassador to Ireland, Christopher T.E. Ewart-Biggs, and his secretary were killed when a land mine went off beneath the ambassador's car in Dublin.

In 1980 draft registration for 19- and 20-year-old males was reinstituted. On the same day, Walter Polovchak, 12, who said he did not want to return to the Soviet Ukraine with his family, was granted political asylum in Chicago. Erie St. Miss Hopkins, a school board member since 1985, was killed Sunday in an auto accident in central Illinois while driving to the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta. A member Operation PUSH, she had intended to provide support for Rev. Jesse Jackson at the convention. Miss Hopkins had been a Chicago teacher and administrator from 1951 to 1983 and drew upon these 32 years of experience after being appointed to the Board of Education.

She also was a member of the vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church, 125 E. 26th where a wake will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Miss Hopkins is survived by a sister, Sterline Hudson.

Maria S. DiSalvo Maria S. DiSalvo, 96, a Chicago resident since 1913, died Wednesday in Alexian Brothers Medical Center, Elk Grove Village. Mrs. DiSalvo was born in Castelverino, Italy, in 1892, and came to the United States in 1913.

She lived on the Northwest Side. She is survived by a daughter, Theresa Zaccagnini; a son, Anthony; 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Marcelline Catholic Church, 822 S.

He was the founder and past president of the Safety Socket Screw Corporation, 6479 N. Avondale Chicago. In the 1950s he was the president of the board of education for Niles Township High School and a founder of the Edgebrook Lutheran Church. Mr. Payne is survived by his wife, Virginia; a son, Richard a daughter, Diane five grandchildren; and a greatgrandchild.

Edward Van Dyke Services for Edward Van Dyke, 87, a retired pattern maker, will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the First Presbyterian Church of Homewood, 17929 Gottschalk St. in the south suburb. Mr. Van Dyke, died Tuesday in his home in Homewood.

From 1930 until 1955, Mr. Van Dyke operated his own pattern-making firm in Chicago. He then worked for the Universal Brush in Markham, until he retired in 1977. Mr. Van Dyke is survived by his wife, Hedvig; daughter, Karen Maurer; two grandchildren; and a sister.

Orville B. Tearney Orville B. Tearney, 76, a retired finance executive for Inland Steel died Monday at his home in downtown Chicago. A memorial service for Mr. Tearney, who worked as an insurance consultant for the Cook County Board after leaving Inland in 1972, will be announced later.

Mr. Tearney, who started working at Inland in the 1930s, was also a member of the Illinois militia in the 1940s and a member of the Union League Club. Survivors include his wife, Helen, and a daughter, Kathryn Madsen. John F. Roggenkamp Services for John F.

Roggenkamp, a retired senior vice president at Harper-Wyman in Lisle, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel at 4727 W. 103rd Oak Lawn. Mr. Roggenkamp, 76, of Seminole, died Sunday at Havana Hospital, in St.

Petersburg, Roggenkamp worked at Harper for 35 years before retiring in 1970. A former resident of the Beverly neighborhood, he moved to Florida after retiring. Survivors include his wife, Frances; two sons, Jack and Bruce; one daughter, Karen Englehart; two brothers, George and William; one sister, Evelyn; and three grandchildren. Caroline L. Wolfarth, 89, who lived in Chicago and Mount Prospect for many years. Mrs. Wolfarth died in La Habre on July 12. She was born in Chicago, moved to Mount Prospect in 1929, and lived in that suburb until 15. years ago.

Mrs. Wolfarth is survived by her husband, Dr. Alfred; three sons, Robert, Edward, and Charles; a daughter, Eleanor Langhenry; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Mr. O'Neill, who died Tuesday in Stamford Hospital, Stamford, was a former director and executive vice president of Xerox Rochester, New York. He retired in 1981. Until the time of his death he was a partner in Re-. gional Financial Enterprises, a venture capital firm in New Canaan.

He was active in many charities and was a trustee of Boston College.
