If any conclusion can be drawn from the selections, it is that good taste and old-fashioned integrity of form can still triumph over the cheap exhibitionism that continues to afflict architecture (and sometimes even wins prizes). It is also significant That the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings Merrill (SOM) won four of the 11 distinguished building awards presented by the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. SOM has long been the city's largest design firm, dominant in downtown skyscraper construction. Still, in the last few years, its grip has weakened as out-of-town firms have captured major Chicago commissions. The awards rein force SOM's reputation for consistently solid and decorous design, a characteristic that does not apply to some of its iiew competitors.

Jurors who choose the win-' ning projects vary from year to year in their degree of conservatism or receptivity to extravagant ideas. The 1987 jurors, who seemed to play it down the middle, were Frances Halsband, of R.M. Kliment and Frances Halsband Architects, New York; George Hoover, of Hoover Berg Desmond, Denver, and Kent Hubell, of Kent Hubell Architects, Ann Arbor, Mich. Four of the 11 design citations are classified as "honor awards," the highest accolade bestowed by the American Institute of Architects. Those awards went to: Hammond, Beeby and Babka for the Hansen House, a private residence in Wilmette that fits its environs, makes a bow to the archetype of a two-bedroom Colonial, but makes a strong yet dig- nified statement all its own.

The design "really says church in the strongest possible terms," said the jury, "and its roots are clearly in early American ecclesiastical buildings." One step down in prestige are the "citations of merit," awarded to: SOM, for the 222 N. LaSaUe St project, which included the renovation and expansion of the Builders' Building constructed in 1927. The single most striking feature of the endeavor was the restoration of an elaborately decorated, four-story rotunda.
