Section 4 Chicago Tribune, Thursday, July 7, 198 BASEBALL BOXING Sox M.m" rl i -T-j uK' rJ Ll: V''' tma.tvMM -frf sertniieiiT-8'- -jesaK- I 4 1 1 ball," McDowell said. "I didn't have great velocity, but I was able to hit the outside corner. I feel I'm finally beginning to settle down a little bit." Greg Walker hopes he's turned a corner of some sort. He got the Sox going in the second with a solo homer off loser Mike Boddicker. In other years, that might not have been particular cause for a big celebration.

But this year has been different for the big first baseman. Amazingly, in the 82d game of the season, Walker connected for his first Comiskey Park homer and only his fifth of the year. "I was happy to see it go out," said Walker of his upper-deck shot. "It's been a while." Walker still hasn't been able to figure out the problem. He had 27 homers last year.

At times, the average hasn't alway been there but the power has. Until this season. "I've never not hit for power," Walker said. "I'm not dealing with it very well. I've been trying to work through it.

Very few days go by when I'm not taking extra batting practice. The effort has been there but the results haven't." Fregosi said he hopes the results will be seen in the second half. "That was a big homer for Walker and us," Fregosi said. "Hopefully, he will start swinging the bat like he can. I knew he would hit a homer here this season, I just didn't know when.

Hopefully, this will set him up for bigger and better things." The Sox added another run in the second when, with two outs, Ozzie Guillen singled and scored on Fred Manrique's double. The runs were one more than needed by McDowell, who obviously is beginning to catch on. He held them to only one hit through six innings. Fregosi, though, didn't allow McDowell to go for the complete game, cutting him off at 112 pitches. After struggling during the early part of the season with the Sox, John Davis bounced back at Vancouver. He had a 1.38 earned run average with five saves and hadn't been scored upon in his last eight outings.

Patterson, a left-hander, was 4-3 with a 3.29 ERA and five saves. Morman, who has been up and down twice this season, expected to be returned to Vancouver, because the Sox needed an extra pitcher for their back-to-back double-headers with Boston this weekend. Joel Davis, though, took the news hard. He was 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA with the Sox after getting off to a fast start at Vancouver. "I was off to the best year of my life," Davis said.

"The one thing I want to do this year was stay in place. I've been up and down my whole career. I was surprised they called me up in the first place. I wasn't ready to come up." Ivan Calderon Is scheduled to travel to Los Angeles Monday to see Dr. Frank Jobe.

Calderon hopes the orthopedic specialist will be able to determine what's wrong with his chronic left shoulder. "We just want a second opinion," said Calderon's agent, Jaime Torres. "We haven't been able to find anything wrong with the shoulder. Hopefully, Dr. Jobe will be able to provide us with any answers." Torres said Calderon went through a simular situation with Seattle during his rookie season in 1985.

"He was playing, but his hand kept hurting," said Torres. "The doctors couldn't find anything wrong, so he finally went to Los Angeles not to see Jobe. They took an X-ray In a different position and found a broken bone, which required surgery." Ex-Sox General Manager Roland Hemond, now the head man for Baltimore, arrived into town for the final game of the series. "I couldn't miss a series with the Sox in Chicago," Hemond said. The Sox will have a complete off-day Thursday.

No workout Is scheduled. General Manager Larry Hlmes said he's confident an agreement will be reached soon between the Sox and the city of Sarasota, to keep the team's training facilities there. When you're the new guy at a school, they the gangs try to initiate you first.

I was letting them know if they came my way, they'd have hard trouble." That attitude, not surprisingly, only caused him trouble, and soon he found himself brushing up perilously close to the law. His teachers, quickly wearied by his hostility, regularly threatened to call the police on him, and he seemed destined to become just another dropout who would end up spending his life on the fringes. But then, in desperation, the discipline counselor at Wells approached Tom O'Shea, an English teacher at the school who also ran the boxing program at the Northwestern University Settlement House. "See what you can do with him?" pleaded the counselor. "It was nothing official.

In fact, it was very unofficial," recalled O'Shea. But he eventually did invite McGroom over for a look, and, after a few days, Terry and Vernon and Wolf strolled in. Another few days later, McGroom reappeared, and this time he asked some questions. Finally, he climbed into the ring and found himself getting knocked about unceremoniously. He was, recalled O'Shea, just this side of clumsy, yet neither that nor the defeats he suffered in his first bouts would deter him.

Each day, he came back to the house determined to improve, and often he found himself discussing Muhammad Ali with his Irish trainer. O'Shea had been a teammate of Ali, the fighter's idol, on the 1960 National Golden Glove team, and he regaled McGroom with tales about that wondrous heavyweight, then known as Cassius Clay. "I told him," recalled O'Shea, "that champions were guys who worked. I told him I remembered Cassius Clay as quiet, as a guy who never swore but always worked. He'd be waiting for us outside our hotel with big boots on; he'd be waiting for us to take our morning run.

I remembered that that was the sign of a champion even at 16 years old. "Terry had that same thing at the gym. He was willing to work with anyone. He might not do well. He might lose a bout.

He won a Chicago Park District title in 1983 and a Golden Gloves novice title in 1984. There were park district and CYO titles in 1985 and '86 and then, in 1987 and '88, national light-heavyweight Gloves titles. At Wells, he repeated his freshman year after flunking all of his classes and went on to graduate with honors.

shocked a lot of people," said O'Shea.) His pictures were plastered onto the school's walls a household word there," said O'Shea) and on the streets, the gangs treated him with respect and the neighborhood, children came to regard him as an idol. "Other kids look up him to him now. He's their leader now, and it's wonderful how he helps them," said Ellen Ward, now a teacher at Lake View High who was at Wells when McGroom was a freshman. "I always wanted to be more than just a good fighter," added McGroom. "If I just had that reputation, then went and told kids to be good in school and didn't have1 good grades myself, what I said) would mean nothing.

Little they're what's most important toi me now. The guys already out there, you can't tell them anything. Little kids are the ones who can make it better." "His story's a fairy tale," concluded O'Shea. "A fairy tale all the way down." But, as we said, boxing sneers at romantic notions. So Terry McGroom did not win Tuesday night.

Instead, he was disqualified1 in the second round for repeatedly holding Bomani Parker, and this latest chapter in his tale ended in ignominious defeat. He walked sullenly from the ring after the decision was announced and seemed on the verge of tears as the tape was cut from his hands. As boxers often do after a loss, he then complained about the But finally, almost imperceptibly, his shoulders straightened and he said, "This was just another fight. I lost, but I'm not forgotten. I'm down, but I'm not out.

Then Terry McGroom turned and disappeared into the night He was, most certainly, off to add another chapter to a tale now marred by a bitter defeat, but still containing so many more examples of sparkling success. NOTEBOOK The last bout matched 1987 national heavyweight champ Michael Bent and former Ohio State linebacker W. Derek Isaman, who lost 4-1 while enduring numerous low blows. Bent moved into the finals against current national champ Ray Mercer, who beat Charlton Mollis. Among the spectators were Mike Trainer, lawyer-manager for Sugar Ray Leonard; a cohort of Butch Lewis, Michael Spinks' manager, and reps connected with pro manager Lou Duva, with Josephine Aber-crombie's Houston Boxing Association (HBA) and with Detroit's Kronk Gym.

They were here to befriend pro prospects amid rumors of avid recruiting and illegal payments. "Yeah, I see em," said Chicagoan Kclcic Banks, who has been training in Houston at Abercrombic's. "I see 'em bugging other fighters. To me, HBA1 seems honest If I get what I need from them, I look forward to signing. But nothing's guaranteed." What about the rumor that Leonard is interested in signing him? "We're friends," said Banks.

Dancing with speed and ease and throwing machine-gun-like flurries, Kenny Gould preserved a childhood dream Wednesday night with an easy unanimous decision over Gerry Payne in a 147-pound semifinal at the U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials. His victory over the dangerous Payne, who had knocked out national champ Alton Rice early in the first round Tuesday, moved Gould into Saturday's final against Golden Gloves champion Ron Morgan.

It also reintroduced the style he had used to gain prominence earlier before trying to be a slugger in recent bouts. "As I was going into the ring," he said, "I was wondering when that style would come back to me. It ended up coming back at the right time. It's always been under my belt for nights like this, and that's what you're going to see from now on. Taking my opponents into a fast pace.

Taking the momentum, then using it to control the fight." The one big surprise was in the 119-pound division. Kennedy McKinney upset former national champ Michael Collins to reach the finals against current national champ Jemal Hinton, who beat Fernando Rodriguez. Hinton, one of the top fighters here, is touted by many as a future pro champion probably as a lightweight. ONlY13MONTHt Dehumidifiers from 12 pint to 50 pint capacity.
