The Mailbag Runneth O'er "Facts vs. Make-Believe!" That was the title of this little present that came along in the mail shortly after Christmas: DEAR BOB: You recently wrote, in substance, that Ole Miss Syracuse) might appear, in the Rose Bowl in the near future. as to Mississippi and other Southern teams, are you actually so self-deluded? The South has major bowls known to all in the other 47 continental U.S. of (1) Sugar in Louisiana, (2) Orange in Florida, (3) Cotton in Blu- bonnet in Texas. Moreover, the South (Alabama) plays in the North's and East's Liberty Bowl in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

(That totals FIVE (5) major bowls in which the South plays this year.) Why, in these established premises, should the South send its top teams to the Far West's 2nd or 3rd- rate Rose Bowl? Be, if you may, realistic, objective and mature. And analyze the facts, not make-believe. Across the nation, the AP reported that the South placed SEVEN (7) teams in the nation's TOP TEN (10) and EIGHT (8) in the nation's top 11! (And wither any Don Clark-McKeever mayhem on the sidelines after play, with victim lying helpless on back.) Why cannot the enormous UCLA, USC and other California schools produce Top-10 Why is it that UC, USC, UCLA and Stanford never play in Philadelphia's Liberty Bowl (up East or North) or in any of the other major Bowls? Never, invited? Certainly, the California schools have the quantity. Does California's hybrid 15-16 millions population lack the duality? There has to be a cause and effect, if one shuns self-delusion and make-believe. Shall Rise Again Because the writers have so long been brainwashed into make-believe delusions anc distortions of truth, this COLD FACTS (Truth) revelation will make you mad as truth always renders a thoroughly prejudiced and brainwashed mental robot, You'll trot out all your hackneyed Hate-the- South platitudes and cliches and so muddy the waters that the facts shall be out of view.

It always follows. The Far West's Hollywood-Los Angeles sports "authorities" have never yet learned that, self- delusion notwithstanding, they cannot win them on the sports page; that quantity, per se, is no substitute for quality; that make-believe is for morons, and facts are for mental adults. Think on it. It probably will give you a pain, however. My alma mater, Alabama, played in your Hose Bowl SIX (6) times, 1.926-'46, as I recall the years.

Alabama lost. just ONE of these SIX on foreign soil by 13-0. As I recall the record (Facts vs. Make-Believe) all the California schools COMBINED have won only ONE (1) of your home Rose Bowl games in the last FOURTEEN (14). Alabama again trounced the Far, West in the '46 Rose Bowl, then the Big Ten over in '47.

Quantity docs not dp. it. Sec the national record. Perpetual whining and incessant cry-baby tactics and half-truths do not do a decent man's job, either. One of Fourteen! "There is no darkness by Add: And nurtured lies and prejudices by anclj of the largely-controlled "free Pasadena.

Was going to take a few whacks at "your boy" and defend Boland when my eyes caught that item of "Santa Anita honoring I ll Terrang." You may not believe, but the tears came to I my eyes. I was so happy for him.

The middle of December I wrote a long, long letter to Mr. Gwynn Wilson, executive vice president, asking him to honor Terrang on opening day of their Silver Jubilee. And the reason I chose him 1 to write to, didn't think it would take an act of Congress -to grant. I was so angry at that poll of "The Best at Santa Anita." I presented all of his merits over the years, and suggested parading hiin and presenting him with a blanket. "Just any old blanket would do, but just honor him!" And if they didn't, it would most likely be another 25 years before a California hred would win 10 slakes again, five more than any horse that had won there.

I think every horse has earned the right to be retired at seven, don't you? But I sure will miss him! It was a race when he was in it. I feel sure my letter did some good. I'll be there with my lucky gold hoop earrings on, for old times sake, ha. Sec you at the races (only been out but once, on New Year's Day, but satisfactory. Started the year right).

The assembly a and means committee of the state egislalure yesterday concluded a two-day hearing on the question of what to do with the Olympic property. State park commissioner Will Rogers Jr. told the committee California should get out of Squaw Valley before spending any more money there.

Rogers said it would be un- ivise to spend additional funds to make Squaw Valley a state park because the money could used to the greater advantage of more persons by developing recreation areas.
