Wellsville Softball League Scheduled to Open Campaign on Monday Another season of Wellsville soflball league action will get underway Monday with several changes marking the start of this campaign. The defending champion Texas Hot team will be back to defend its title, and it will face the added challenge of two new entries one from Worthington and the other from Preheater in addition to the established Preheater and Worthington clubs from a year ago. The two new clubs make the circuit a six-team affair as Cuba Acme has dropped out. The "new" Worthington team will be known as the Union team with the old entry regaining the Worlhinglon tab.

The returning Air Preheater squad will be called the APCO with the new going with just the name of Preheater. Two diamonds will be used during the season with Monday's opener slated for a 6:30 start at the Washington School field (designated as 1 in the schedule). Play will alternate between there and the lagoon area fiejd 2). the first half of the season ends June 30 with the second portion to get underway July 5. A closer look at the teams: i TEXAS HOT The Hots, champions of a year ago, wll find things a more difficult this season "as they will be without the services of several key players who carried them to the crown a year ago.

Jim Marsh, Harley Linza, Rich Iletzel, and Rene Lewis are no longer with the club, and Manager Bill Simons will be hard pressed to find replacements. He hopes he can plug some of the gaps with newcomers John Hewes, Lou Moli- sani, Fred Damasco, Pat O'Neill, Joe Recio, Blair Pritchard, and Neil Graves. Returning veterans include Frank Cady, Dick Marble, Rocky Sweeney, Tom Morris, Bill Stiles, Mike Forhan, Doug Dillon, Tom Monico, and Guy Grantier the last two after the high school season ends. LEGION Losers of a best-of-five playoff series for the title a year ago, the Legion squad, under the managership of George Knight, is setting its sights on knocking off the Hots and replacing them as the number one team. Knight, with assistant skipper Vern Barlow, will have plenty of bat power returning with Larry Monroe and Gordy Burdick.

Both hit for averages and were one-two in home runs. Other top batsmen for the Legion back for another season include Vern Barlow, Dave Gordon, and the Knight brothers George and Rich. New additions to the club include Rene Lewis who came over from the Hots, Steve Pratt, Ebbin Johnson, and Steve Austin. Denny Browning will handle the pitching chores an area where he has toiled with more than adequate success the past two seasons. WORTHINGTON Hoping to improve on a fourth- place finish of a year ago, Manager Artie Klang expects deeper depth on the squad to be a major factor in a bid to make a chase for the top.

Several new players dot the roster with Gary Ellis, a veteran of three seasons of service softball, hoped to be a boost on the mound. He'll have veteran catcher Lefty Wonderling to work with and a new face at first base Doug Wachter, a transfer from the Legion. Dick Rahr, inactive the past two seasons, is coming "out of retirement" for second base duties while Manager Klang will toil at shortstop. In the pasture, Don Weinhauer, Jim Cooper, Max Eldridge, Nat Scott, and John Vargo will vie as returning veterans for the positions, but they will have to face the challenge of newcomers Dave Walsh, Dan Aiken, Terry Quackenbush, and Gerry Stisser. APCO Manager Fritz Graves will have plenty of veterans returning to form what should be a strong nucleus for his club including veteran hurler Dave Munro.

He will get mound help from the skipper and Dick Other returnees include Bill Law, catcher; Jim Smith, sec- on.d base; John Giopulos, shortstop; Dick Brunei), third base; Joe Edgley, centerfield; and Frank Daha'r, leftfield. Manager Graves has hopes Wilbur Hawley can be lured back to action after a lenthy retirement period. New men who fit into the team's plans include Jim Stewart, Irv Eldridge, Carlin, Bob Merrick, Harold Allen, and Frank and Duane Cornish. PRKHEATER The "new" Preheater team also will have some of the players from the plant's entry of a year ago on its roster such as Jim Brush, Steve Hunt, Ron Ir.graham, Bill Loughlin, Jim Sherry, and Bill Stcffenhagen. Manager Jim Twyman, in looking for "new blood" on the squad, has conic up with what he hopes will be good additions in Nyhl Austin, Hugh Elliott, Sonny Oilman, Ray McGuirl, Dave Palmatier, Bob Phillips, and Charlie Wildman.

UNION Herb Van Schaick, one of the best pitchers in the- league a year ago with the Worthington squad, will take over as manager of the new Worthington team with assistance in the duties coming from George Porter. They are among the few veterans available along with Whitey Gorsuch who will patrol cen- terficld. Help on the mound is expected from Francisco Grillo a veteran of Hornell softball wars of a few campaigns back. Newcomers looking for starting roles include Bob Borne, Chuck Lehman, Bill Wonderling, Harold Goodrich, Bill Gardner, Bob Jones, Dick Dean, and Bob Boyd. The schedule: Game Time (5:30 p.m.
