Cb.iusries 8 Section 1 Chicago Tribune, Saturday, June 986 'Barber hoD snorts colmraiist John Cmichael and broke both his elbowt The sports editors of all four Chicago dailies Tribune, News, Sun-Times and Chicago Today served as cochairmen of a giant City of Hope testimonial honoring Westbrook Pegler, former world heavyweight boxing champ Jack Dempsey, Vice President Richard Nixon and Illinois Gov, William i Stratton. Mr. Carmichael was an enthusiastic storyteller, and everyone who knew him had at least one anecdote to tell about him. At at Chicago White-Sox training camp in Sarasota, he was once approached by the Chicago American's Warren, Brown, a Mr. Larrrucnaei on nis retirement from the News in 1972.

He continued to write his "Bar-- ber Shop" column for several years, and also did public relations work for the Sox. In 1975 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.and five years later was one of the first writers named to the Chicago Press Club's new Journalism Hall of Fame. Of his own success as a writer he once said: "You have to train yourself not to ask silly Questions. You learn, too. the teetotaler, who wanted to make sure Mr.

Carmichael, who was the direct opposite, had remembered Fred Lug Mass for Fred Lang, 56, a mechanical engineer, will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in Seven Holy Founders Catholic Church, 124th Street and Ada Avenue, Calumet Park. Mr. Lang, who died Wednesday in his Oriand Park home, was employed at Standard Boiler Tank Company, Riverdale. Survivors include his wife, Joanne, and four sons, Daniel, Joseph, Fred and Martin.

Touhy Ave. Mr. Supera, a real estate dealer and pioneer Near North Side and Old Town home rehabili-tator, died June 1 in his Near North Side residence. A native of Florence, Mr.

Supera came to Chicago at age 19 and opened a restaurant, the Green Shutters, at 233 E. Ohio St. He founded Supera Properties and bought his first house to be rehabilitated in 1941 at 1313 N. State Pkwy. Mr.

Supera's vision was to start a Greenwich Village area in Chicago. He invested in Old Town and Lincoln Park properties while' others questioned the feasibility of redevelopment west of Clark Street He was especially interested in preserving the historic elements in the buildings that he rehabilitated. By Edward Baumann John I. Carmichael, toast-master, raconteur extraordinary and one of the' most universally liked and respected sports writers in the country, died Friday in Columbus Hospital He was 83. A memorial mass for Mr. Carmichael, of the North Side, will be said at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in St Ita's Catholic Church, 5500 N.

Broadway. Once described as "a gentleman who always had an anecdote or corkscrew when the occasion arose Mr. Carmichael had been in failing: health since suffering a stroke several years ago. He stepped down as sports editor of the old Chicago Daily News in 1971, and officially retired the' following year. His colleague, Dave Condon, who served as Wake of the News columnist at The Tribune when Mr.

Carmichael was sports editor of the competing News, once wrote of his counterpart: "Sometime, somewhere, they may have made better gents than John Peerless Carmichael. But I dont know when or where." Mr. Carmichael was born Oct 16, 1902, in Madison, in the days when the local barber shop was the center of sports discussions. When he grew up and became a sports writer he titled his column, "The Barber Shop." He attended Campion College and the University of Wisconsin before taking a job as night police, reporter at the Milwaukee Journal, and later as reporter and drama critic for the Milwaukee Leader. He came to Chicago on vacation in 1927 and ended up on the sports desk of the old Herald Examiner.

Mr. Carmichael crossed the Madison Street bridge to the Daily News in 1932. His syndicated "Barber Shop," started two years later, soon became recognized as one of the best-known sports, columns in the nation. When he was named sports editor in 1943 the News told its readers: "Mr. Carmichael's new duties will not curtail his freedom to go anywhere in the nation that exciting sports news develops.

The only change will be that he will be okaying his own expense accounts." Mr. Carmichael's first wife, Marie, a teacher of retarded children, died in 1953. In 1956, he married Kay Naughton and took heron their honeymoon to New York to watch Gene Fullmer wrest the middleweight boxing crown from Sugar Ray Robinson. Also in 1956, the Chicago Press Veterans Association named Mr. Carmichael its Press Veteran of the Year.

Among those attending a dinner in his honor at old LaSalle Hotel were journalist to wire nis column. "Hell, yes; I wrote it and sent it hours ago," bubbled Mr. Carmichael, patting his pocket "Oh, oh," he added, withdrawing a folded piece of paper. "You. know, what? I still have it in my cqatP Tragedy of a sort befell Mr.

Carmichael on a bitter February day in 1966, when he flew up from Florida to attend the funerals of, Eva Gallagher, wife of Jim Gallagher, the former Chicago Cubs' general manager, and Mm Halas, wife of the Chicago Bears' George Halas, who died within hours of one another. Hunched over with' his hands jammed deep in his overcoat pockets as he bucked the biting wind, Mr. Carmichael slip-" ped backward on a patch of ice value of observing a confidence, or -you don't get a second time, around with sports people." Above all else, Mr. Carmichael was an unashamed American League baseball fan. The low point of his career was undoubtedly the 1938 All-Star Game, won by the Nationals 4-1, when his entire Daily News column consisted of blank white space with a single comment at the bottom, "Mr.

Carmichael has nothing to say to his constituents today. Johrr P. Carmichael in 1965: The former sports editor of the Chicago Daily News had beery. In failing health since suffering a stroke several years ago. Besides his wife, Mr.

Carmichael is survived by a son, John and eight grandchildren. McLEAN WARNER FLOOD Josephine E.
