Chicaoo Tribune. Friday, October 26. 1934 Section 4 Football Daskctbnil Bears may be thin at left linebacker TBig as Hayes lasts 1 game as women's coach HFL notes his brief coaching career. The statement issued by the Shamrocks last week said only that Hayes left because he had "prior commitments." Avery Weathers, Houston's director of public relations, and principal investor Vic Bonner were available this week, but their comments were not too informative. Weathers said: "I don't know why be left.

It might have been a previous commitment. He didn't tell us anything. He really didn't give us a reason." BONNER SAID: "His job was not permanent. 1 understood he had another commitment and if that came up, he'd leave." What was that prior commitment and where is Elvin now? "I don't have the slightest idea," Bonner said. Why did the Shamrocks hire a coach who had a prior commitment? Bonner said, "He was willing to help us out and we appreciated it." Hayes ended his 16-year professional career last April with the Houston Rockets.

He is spending his first year of retirement working on various business ventures in the Houston area and getting a degree at the University of Houston, where he was an All-America and national Player of the Year as a senior in 1968. He also is assisting Cougars' coach Guy Lewis, volunteering at practice to help coach Lewis' big men. He is not a paid assistant and apparently doesn't show up on a regular basis. "I'm coming in cold," said Hobbs, coach of the AAU national women's champions in 1983 and 1984. "I wasn't in a position to bring in my own AAU players, but the players I've got will be competitive." By Jody Homer ELVIN HAYES set records as a college and professional basketball player, and now lie's setting records as a coach.

The man who holds NBA records for most minutes played and most shots taken has earned a new distinction. Try this trivia question: What former pro oasketball player coached only one game in the Women's American ball Association and then threw in the towel? The Big that's who. In the world of the WABA, where teams, coaches and players change faster than Superman in a phone booth, Hayes has set the record for shortest coaching stint. After approximately two weeks and exactly one game as coach of the Houston Shamrocks, Hayes resigned last week, leaving the Shamrocks leaderless. They played and lost two games over the weekend without a head coach.

Monday, the Shamrocks called David Hobbs, a Texas AAU women's coach, and offered him the job. By Monday afternoon, Hobbs had accepted. He'll travel with the team to Chicago when the Shamrocks play the Spirit of Chicago at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. MOST OF THE Spirit's games are played at the College of Du Page in Glen Ellyn, but this one will be at the Hammond Ind.J Civic Center as part of a league experiment to test the possibility of a Hammond franchise next year.

Chicago and Houston play again at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. This one's at the College of Du Page. Hayes was not available to comment on F'ora Chicago Tribune mm BEARS' LEFT linebacker Otis Wilson is questionable for Sunday's game against Minnesota because of a groin muscle injury. Coach Mike DiUca said Thursday that rookie Wilber Marshall probably will start, but he is hindered by a hamstring injury.

Rookie Ron Rivera also is working at the position. Punter Dave Finzer went home with the flu. Walter Payton returned for part of practice after missing Wednesday with the flu. "I just hope that's all that get it," said Ditka. THE BEARS will be facing a legend Sunday when they go against Jan Stenerud.

The Vikings' kicker and San Diego wide receiver Charlie Joiner are the only two active survivors from the American Football League. THE LEAGUE'S dirtiest players, according to a poll of the Washington Redskins: 1. The Los Angeles Raiders, collectively. 2. Bears' safety Gary Fencik.

3. New York Giants' running back Butch Wool-folk. 4. Redskin tight end Rick Walker. COMMISSIONER Pete Rorelle has tipped his hand on one weapon the league will use to combat the $440 million antitrust suit filed against it by the United States Football League the calendar.

Rozelle told reporters at the NFL meetings in New Orleans this week that he believes it will take two years or more for the case to come to trial. He didn't say it, but you can bet that he and other NFL officials are hoping the USFL has melted away by that time. Roy Conn, the lawyer who filed the suit for the USFL, knows that well he acknowledges that he's used time as a weapon many times, dragging out depositions, requesting postponements, moving trial dates back. His strategy in this case is to move for summary judgment a quick decision from the bench in his favor. Lawyers say summary judgments are hard to come by unless the case is overwhelming.

And even if there is one, there are appeals, and appeals of appeals and so on. THE DENVER BRONCOS have listed quarterback John Elway as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Raiders. A team spokesman said Elway, who is nursing a bruised right collarbone suffered in the Broncos' 37-7 victory at Buffalo, practiced with the team but was not up to full speed." Elway's injury prompted him to cut short his practice on Wednesday after throwing only a few passes. "He just wasn't able to loosen his arm up," said coach Dan Reeves. "He tried to throw and he had a lot of pain.

I'd say right now, he's doubtful for the game. But we can't worry about it. You worry about the things you have some control over." NBC SPORTS officials say they will take no disciplinary action against Reggie Rucker, the pro football analyst who admitted he lied on the air during Sunday's Cincinnati-Cleveland game. However, NBC officials say they will watch Rucker "a little more carefully." Rucker said he had dinner with Bengals coach Sam Wyche Saturday night. Wyche said that wasn't true and called Rucker "a blatant liar." Rucker later admitted, "I did not have dinner with him, but I did interview him." Wyche said the "interview" consisted of about a 90-second session before the game.

AP Laseipholo Elvin Hayes, who stuck with the NBA for 16 years, has quit after one game as coach of the Houston Shamrocks, a women's professional team.
