What is unusual, however, is for a studio to re-release a film that opened and closed in one New York theater after a disastrous two-week run and unanimously bad reviews from both the critics and exhibitors. No, it's not "Heaven's Gate" but a $9-million suspense thriller from Walt Disney Productions called "The Watcher in the Woods." The chief complaint voiced last year over "The Watcher," which stars Bette Davis, David McCallum and Carroll Baker, centered on an ending that many felt was unresolved. And criticism was also leveled at a creature, called The Watcher, that pops up in the end FOLLOW-UPS 2 BUSBY BERKELEY HITS NOV I 42nd Street A Universal Release R. I c.

So, with a new $l-million ending and a reworked marketing and advertising campaign, this Disney ghost story recently opened on the East Coast in nearly 250 theaters to mediocre results. The first week's box office was $1.2 million, according to Dick Cook, an assistant to the president of Buena Vista, Disney's distribution arm. "The Watcher's first week at the box office was "not tremendous but certainly not terrible. It was respectable," said Cook.

He admitted that although not all the "numbers are in," the film experienced a 25 dropoff in its second week.
