CARMEL didn't play a baseball game Tuesday, but four major league scouts showed up anyway just to watch the Caravan practice. The object of their attention was senior catcher Erik Pappas, who earlier Tuesday had signed a national letter of intent to play college baseball at Arizona State University.

Sun Devils' coach Jim Brock flew to Chicago Monday night in order to sign Pappas. Pappas, however, might not play for the Sun Devils after all because "he has a chance to be the first pick of the June draft," Brock said.

Pappas, who is hitting .462 and has thrown out all five of the runners who have tried to steal against him this season, has indicated that, if the offer is right, he will play professionally. Eric Amen doubled to open the sixth and moved to third on Jason Klonoski's fielder's choice. The unnerved Panthers then committed two errors that allowed the tying and winning runs to score.

Since Eric Kumerow, a highly recruited two-sport star at Oak Park High School and The Tribune's first Athlete of the Year, chose to attend Ohio State, decisions have followed him. First, Kumerow chose to forgo playing basketball to concentrate on football.

Kumerow, a two-way football player, next shed his aspirations to play quarterback following a freshman season on the bench. He requested a transfer to defense. Now, after settling comfortably into a linebacker position in spring practices, the 6-foot-6-inch, 230-pound package of promise says he's finally free to begin tackling the sport the way he meant to from the start. "I FEEL I CAN just go out and play and not have the jitters or be nervous all the time like I was at Kumerow said. "I eel a lot looser, and I love the contact.

Flynn struck out seven, did not issue a walk, faced only 19 batters one over the six-inning limit and retired the last 11 batters in a row. Joliet Catholic 3, Gordon Tech 1-Jeff Meyer 3-1 worked the first five innings to get the victory, and Mike Papierski mopped up and contributed an RBI-double to the No. 1-ranked Hilltoppers' attack.

Eric Kumerow first when I said I was going to do it," Kumerow said. "I mean, they probably hadn't seen too many quarterbacks come over to play the position. But I think after a few days they saw I could hit. I think I changed a few minds." The move shouldn't be much of a jolt to the many college coaches who recruited Kumerow. Most projected him as a linebacker from the start.

"He made a play on us two years ago I'll' never forget because it cost us a conference championship," Glenbard West's Jim Covert said. "He was playing safety about five yards off the ball. It was fourth and one at their 6-yard line late in the game. We sent our All-State running back Alex Green outside, and he came up to stop him with a great tackle." PAGAC, AN ex-Chicago Bear and Ohio State alum who made switches from tight end to linebacker during his pro and college careers, was well aware of Kumerow's two-way skills. "I don't know how the whole thing got started, with him switching to defense, but I know I was more than happy to get him," Pagac said.

"Right now, his big adjustment is being on somebody's nose. He was a safety in high school and that's lot different on defense. He's got to learn to fight off blockers and read keys at the same time." But Kumerow, who has added about 10 pounds of muscle in Ohio State's weight room, relishes the challenge. "Last year, toward the end of the season, I felt I was just going through the motions at quarterback," he said. "But this is different.

Kumerow appears primed for a starting spot at right outside linebacker after Vk weeks of spring drills.

"We're counting on getting a lot of playing time out of him this fall," said Fred Pagac, the Buckeyes' linebacker coach. THE PROSPECTS are certainly brighter than they were at quarterback, where Kumerow faced a battle with two-year starter Mike Tomczak, a graduate of Thornton Fractional 'North High School in Calumet City, and No. 1 reserve Jim Karsatos. Late in the 1983 season, when Kumerow first approached his coaches about the move to linebacker, he came to the conclusion the battle was one he could not win. "There are a lot of places Eric could Play," said Ohio State coach Earle Bruce, noting Eric's size and talents.

"I first thought about moving him to tight end. "But I know he played a lot of good defense in high school. Right now, he's second team, but that doesn't mean as much as it would at quarterback. The outside. linebacking is pretty wide open." "I DON'T THINK my teammates took me too seriously at STARRED AUTO SERVICE CENTERS OPEN SUNDAY 12-5 PM BERWYN 700 W.

There is as vet no coach and no nickname for the team. According to league commissioner Bill Byrne, Chicago will play its games at Triton College in River Grove. The league is scheduled for a fall debut. Byrne was the founder of the now defunct Women's Pro Basketball Association, which lasted three seasons. "We might have been five years too early with the WBA," said Byrne.

"A shorter season of only 22 games, 11 home and 11 away, will help us. The season was too long before. And the No. 1 thing is television. We've got a good television deal.

I can't talk about it now, but it's with cable." Other teams will be in New York, Baltimore, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, New Jersey, Columbus Ohio and Milwaukee. One more team is supposed to be added in the next few weeks. Former Old Dominion star Anne Donovan 6-8 was Chicago's first free-agent pick. 1 Ironllv women's nrn lpncnip fnrminc CHICAGO 4809 N.
