"In this league," said Dave Levy, the Chargers' offen sive line coach, "everyone is the same size." Among Levy's athletes is a man called Moosic, a nickname that would seem to imply the subject is somewhat larger than his colleagues. Moosie, however, is guard Doug Wilkerson, a mere 254 pounds. He is, in fact, the lightest of the five starting interior linemen, though this is not to suggest that he could diet for a week and get a mount in the Kentucky Derby. The point is that Wilkerson cannot attain success CAMDEN GARDENS A professional business location adjacent to the San Diego Fwy, on the corridor to Century City.

One of his best efforts, and most noticeable, was on national television last year against Dallas and Randy White, one of the NFL's better defensive linemen. "Randy White," Levy said, "made one tackle in the entire game. Wnite happened to be one of the better players he goes against, but he performs like that every week." Fouls has observed that the older a player gets the more he relies on the mental and the less on the physical.

It fits well with Wilkerson's philosophy on what maturity and experience can do for the mental part of a player's game. "Evcryear you play," he said, "you learn something new. Experience and maturity will clash against experience and maturity Sunday when the Chargers play in Chicago against the Bears. The man across the line from Wilkerson will be 36-year-old Alan Page, a bright fellow who practices law in the off-season. "He's a tremendous football player," Wilkerson said, "and an outstanding individual.

He's won almost every award a defensive lineman can win." Their confrontation will take on all the appearances of a very physical struggle and it will feel to them like a very physical struggle. But take it from Doug Wilkerson. No one can see where the real battle is being fought. 213550-2662 Stan Gerlach David Thind 213550-2541 FRIDAY SATURDAY OCT. 23 24, 1B1 Steel Belted JB2 Hi Graduated Payment Plan 4-Wheel Brake Rellne 2 Front Disc2 Rear Drum OR 4-Wheel Drum Our Servlc.

"Football," Wilkerson said, "is becoming a very mental game. I'd say it's 75 mental.

I think you'll-find that the team that makes the fewest mistakes has a tendency to win games." That would seem to explain why two different teams composed of individuals with essentially the same physical stature can find themselves at opposite ends of the standings. Sooner or later, you'll own Generals end of the NFL in terms of Football IQ. They are by Wilkerson's reckoning. "It has to be a combination of physical and mental," Wilkerson said. "You can have great physical ability, but you have to have the right psychological makeup.

You have to have intelligence. If you have a lot of God-given ability to play, the mental part improves the product." The mental side of life at least the academic side-was of concern to Wilkerson, 34, back in the days when he was a youngster coming out of E.E. Smith High School in Fayette ville, N.C. Universities such as Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Duke and Wake Forest encouraged him to become a part of their programs. Wilkerson chose to attend North Carolina Central in Durham.

"Quite a few people from my high school preceded me," he said, "and some were doing extremely well. They all seemed to graduate. Some came back as teachers." That was what Wilkerson wanted to do. Teach. He was an offensive guardlinebacker who could run the 100 in 9.6, and he was going to teach.

"Pro football crossed my mind," he said, "and I thought if I was good enough I'd have the opportunity. If I wasn't, my goal would be fulfilled. My goal was to go to college and get an education. Thousands of other every day Americans put in their hours in classrooms. If I hadn't played pro football, that's what I would have done." Of course, as a pro football player, particularly a Charger, Wilkerson finds he spends considerable time in what can only be described as classroom situations.

The Chargers have more meetings than a singles bar on Friday afternoon. "We make an extremely concentrated effort to prepare ourselves," Wilkerson said. "We go through the game plans in detail and take extra time studying the films. We want to make as few mistakes as we can men-' tally." Levy grades each of the offensive linemen on each of-the offensive plays, and has his chart in front of him as he reviews each game with Wilkerson and his colleagues. "He mentions when he's made a mistake," Levy said, "before a play starts because he remembers it.

It just doesn't happen very often." Of the Chargers' three senior statesmen in the offensive line-Wilkerson, Ed White and Russ Washington, each 34 Wilkerson has been the most unheralded. The others always seemed to end up in the Pro Bowl, and he has been The Other Guy. "I'm a team Wilkerson shrugged. "I'm glad to sacrifice personal accolades to be on a winning ball-club." In 1980, however, Wilkerson has finally voted onto the AFC Pro Bowl squad. After 11 years, he had finally gotten some recognition.

"I'm thankful it happened," he said. "It's nice to achieve that kind of recognition. Being on a winning ballclub helps." Simply stated, Wilkerson has done too good a job for H489501.o.e.
