Though now best of friends, Morris admits to one tiff 15 years ago.

"We were in the heat of battle putting together a show," he explains, and the pair got into an off-camera fight. Channel 5 staffers who saw it were unsure of the precipitating detail and Morris declines to say. But onlookers were certain of the outcome: Morris decked him. He will Join four Chicago Jj investors in launching Burnham Broadcasting Co. The company will seek to acquire TV stations in medium-sized markets where, said Desnoes, "we believe we can provide high quality programming and responsible management. Humors about Desnoes' future began last April after his ABC bosses in New York hired news director Bill Applegate from WNEV-TV, a CBS affiliate in Boston and dispatched him to Chicago to sort out Channel 7's news operation, a victim of badly sagging ratings. In recent days, the normally voluble Desnoes had been less available to answer questions. On Tuesday, while he was sequestered at an all-day meeting of the Illinois Broadcasters Association, of which he is president, his office issued his resignation statement.

Partners in the new project will be Dean Buntrock, chairman and president of Waste Management, furrier David Meltzer, president of Evans, Loop lawyer Peer Pedersen; and Howard Warren, a private investor well-known in Gold Coast social circles. Odds-on favorite to replace Desnoes at Channel 7 is Dennis Swanson, currently news director at KABC-TV in Los Angeles. A native Chicagoan, Swanson was graduated from the University of Illinois and worked at WGN-TV and at WMAQ-Ch. 5 before moving to the West Coast a decade ago. FRIENDS REMEMBER Swanson as a large man 220 pounds, 6 feet 3 with the demeanor of a Marine Corps drill instructor, which he was.

"He's aggressive. He knows the business, and he's a good newsman, real good," says Channel 2 sportscaster Johnny Morris, who once worked with Swanson at Channel 5. "We went to the races three weeks ago at Hollywood Race Track. He was talking then about coming here, but he didn't know for sure." Wednesday ALIFLI h.sh!ighfc Jacobson to Russia OFF TO RUSSIA with love this Saturday are WBBM-" Ch. 2 anchorman and commentator Walter Jacobson and his bride, photographer Diane Dybsky.

They'll fly from Chicago to Leningrad, via Frankfurt and Helsinki, stay there five days, then take an all-day train ride to Moscow for four further days of sightseeing. Part of a three-week vacation, the 10-day trip "no business, though we'll take cameras and I'll use whatever I can," says Jacobson, who adds that he was embarrassed by recent quotes in "Today's Chicago Woman" that one of his hopes was to start a second family. "How do you 'hope' to start a family?" he asked. But Jacobson confirmed that he has taken one positive step in that direction: He has had his vasectomy reversed. STARTING At 2:45 a.m.

Thursday and for 00 minutes thereafter, indefatigable viewers of wLS-Ch. 7 will see a 'flickering signal and hear garbled voices when TeleFirst Entertainment Recording Service undertakes the first local technical tests of a system designed to pop material directly into home recorders. At your convenience, you switch on a decoder and play Back the tape. This will happen five nights a week, starting in 1984.
