Such a personal film is Euzhan Palcy's "Sugar Cane Alley," opening Thursday at the Biograph Cinemas, telling the story of a gifted and fortunate Martinique youth in 1931 able to break the chain of racism that enslaves his people to a shan-tytown, hard-labor existence. The 11-year-old orphan Jose is a naturally talented observer and writ-ier, but without the intervention and dedication of his grandmother, M'Man Tine, Jose undoubtedly would spend the rest of his life toiling for pennies a day in the sugar cane fields. But M'Man Tine sees a better life for Jose, and she rides herd on him, forcing him to prepare for examinations that will qualify him for advanced schooling in the island's capital city. Another influence is Old Medouze, a quiet but strong rebel who preaches to Jose a back-to-Africa message that he himself plans on effecting upon his own death.
