"Mama's Family," at 7:30 p.m. on NBC-Ch. 5, starts off without the help of Carol Burnett as Eunice. In a fairly rancorless episode, Mama ends up jitterbugging to save the evening at the school dance where the kids were primed for punk rock.

"9 to 5," at 8 p.m. on ABC-Ch. 7. moves into its second season, without Valerie Curtin in the original Jane Fonda role of Judy. Now there's no Judy at all, in fact.

The newest member of the secretarial trio is Leah Ayres as Linda. Donald O'Connor stars as Barnaby the Great, a magician charged with the murder of another magician, in the third season opener of "Simon Simon" at 8 p.m. on CBS-Ch. 2. The series returns without noticeable changes.

Big event on "Cheers" at 8:30 p.m. on NBC-Ch. is Sam's first visit to Diane's apartment, which is full of surprises. Now that Diane and Sam have finally admitted their mutual attraction that doesn't mean love will have smooth sailing. "Knots Landing," going into its fifth year, has Gary Ewing on trial for the murder of Ciji.

New to the cast is Douglas Sheehan, as cable news network president Ben Gibson. He rescues Valene from a horde of reporters at 9 p.m. on CBS-Ch. 2. Series picks IF YOU WATCHED "The Fall Guy" on Wednesday night, you know that Howie Munson was critically wounded.

On Thursday night he winds up in the "Trauma Center" at 7 p.m. on ABC-Ch. 7, where Cutter performs life-or-death surgery on him. PBS picks FILM CRITICS Jeffrey Lyons and Neal Gabler review Tom Berenger and Kevin Kline in "The Big Chill" and Richard Gere and Michael Caine in "Beyond the Limit" on "Sneak Previews" at 8 p.m. on WTTW-Ch.

11. of several top-notch shows: "Magnum, P.I.," "Gimme a Break," "Mama's Family," "Simon Simon," "9 to 5" and "Knots Landing." The Emmy award-winning "Cheers" also returns and get ready for fireworks. For the first time, the show moves out of the bar and into Diane's apartment where some interesting things happen between her and Sam. Remember Ken Howard from "The White Shadow" series a few years ago? Well, he's back in ABC's "It's Not Easy at 8:30 p.m. on ABC-Ch.

7. He stars as one-naif of a divorced couple who live across the street from one another and engage in a sort of retroactive tealousy. Bert Convy plays the man married to Howard's ex-wife and Jayne Meadows is Howard's mother. NBC broadcasts the last of the three "Live and in Person" specials at 9 p.m. on NBC-Ch.

5, with excerpts from the finale of "A Chorus Line," which ends its Broadway run with its performance Thursday. Other guests: Alabama. David Brenner, Liberace, Men at Work and Barry Manilow. Season premieres TOM SELLECK is back for fourth season on "Magnum, P.I.," at 7 p.m. on CBS-Ch.

2, in an episode that has nothing to do with rescuing beautiful women. In fact, it's Magnum's own life that's on the line as he tries to stay afloat after an accident leaves him miles from shore. On "Gimme a Break" at 7 p.m. on NBC- Ch. 5, the good news is that Nell Carter returns 70 pounds lighter.

The program's draw is singer Andy Gibb, appearing as himself. Beamed into a student's home, telecourses are available, as someone once said in another context, through rain, through snow, through hail and dark of night. Also, these days, they can be taped at home, watched when convenient and later reviewed. THERE ARE ground rules. One: "Don't watch In bed." To concentrate, students are told to settle into a comfortable chair, keep notebook and study guide handy and ignore the refrigerator. They should try to view without distraction.

If necessary, kids and spouse should be barred from the TV area. Help is a phone-call away. During college office hours, students can phone instructors to discuss problems. Or, they can leave numbers where instructors can reach them. These days, TV courses are being offered through 900 two-year and four-year colleges across the country.

Says Tom Gripp, dean of development at Coastline Community College near Los Angeles, which has been producing such courses for 11 years: "They offer things you can't do in the classroom. Continued" from first Tempo page PBS affiliate, the station has been able to draw on PBS and BBC sources, as well as program material produced by city college systems in California, Texas and Florida. These days and nights, the station offers 17 subjects, ranging from biology, sociology and American history to management principles and English as a second language.

Most, segments air two or three times during a broadcasting day that runs weekdays from 6 to 10 a.m. and 5 to 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 2 I p.m. Courses can be taken for college or continu-Ing-education credit, but anyone with a TV set is welcome to audit classes.

UNLIKE MANY college lecturers, who drone, Channel 20's pedagogic energy level is, if any- 'thing, bouncy. On "Signing with Cindy," for example, teacher Cindv Cochran gives beginning in- struction in sign-language, then dances with a troupe along a city street while "signing" the lyrics from the movie and TV series "Fame." Other lively fare: "The Computer Programme," where instructors use graphics, mini-robots and on-site film to "demystify new technologies; "Kontakte" and "Zabaranda," quick-tongued methods for viewers to pick up a smattering of German and Spanish while tele-touring Europe; "Shakespeare, with Malcolm College associate; professor Elizabeth Bouchard introducing eight of the BBC's Bard epics, and a gut course, "A Wok Thru China," with two Chicago "cooking artists" who prepare, among other Chinese provincial delicacies, "a devilishly wild mustard sauce." Who is watching all this? Who knows? Though i the station's 60-mile signal reaches into four states; viewership so far is beneath the level where ratings services start to notice. What is known, is that about 2,000 students have registered for courses, a number that Channel 20 officials would like to multiply by three. In Southern California, similar courses offered by Coastline Community College have an enrollment of 4,000. STUDENTS PAY $80 a course to get a study 'guide, watch 30 half-hour programs, and twice a semester, take exams at a city college.

If they pass, they get three credit hours. But the electronic campus is not for everyone. Some students need the personal touch of a live teacher. Others need the interplay of a classroom and rapport I with other students. Lamentably, Channel 20 offers nothing like "Highlights of Intermural Hockey" or of the Saturday Night But for students who are both motivated and organized, says Chaplik, the educational value of learning by TV matches classroom learning.

And for many students, it is TV or nothing. "Our files are bulging with case histories" says Chaplik. "We have police officers who hold two Jobs and can't get to classes on a campus. We lave mothers who have to stay home. We have handicapped people who find it hard to get around.

We have cab drivers who work odd hours. It's not an easy way to go to school, but it's respectable." Studies show little difference in test results between on-campus and on-TV students. As Chaplik puts it: "A 'B' student is a 'B' student." Indeed, some students combine the two, working in some time on campus and the rest at home. "Just one thing," the real mother, herself a stepmother, says to her real sort, "If she starts calling you Hansel and Gretel, run!" The premiere episode of "It's Not Easy" is at 8:30 p.m. Thursday on ABC-Ch. 7, and anyone who has been missing Ken Howard since he and 1 "The White Shadow" disappeared from prime time should pay atten-1 tion. rtIt's Not Easy" is seven giant steps removed from the quality-drama category "White Shadow" was in, but as a mild-mannered sitcom, it's not totally without redeeming features.

"I don't like Sherry," Sharon tells Jack when things begin to look serious between them. Never did, never will." "Never have to," says Jack.
