tp The funniett moris about gTOwins up ever made ta back for a second look. NE LEFT the two concerts of the Twyla I Tharp dancers this weekend reeling from OCX combination oi awe, Dauiement and sheer giddiness. This Chicago premiere engagement of the Tharp 'AWSAEYKHrnus "Touttja tw rrror You'll be glad you cunel I ft. Rim Chkocjoicmdi UMitmttaaHi Cillimilliii ft 72awf23rwt. Opaalal Tafc trnmrnm his black bow tie undone.

Joust and flirt through some incredibly intertwined nouveau-Apache dancer combinations to "One More for My Baby." For a finale, there is, naturally, an in-concert recording of "My Way," with the applause rising to a crescendo as three couples why not all five, Twyla? float across the dance floor in an apotheosis of pop. It's sunny; it's chic; it's smart; it's and it's Just great IN CONTRAST, there Is the wonderfully titled "Bad Smells," also from late 1962, which shows Tharp at her angriest and most aggravated, assaulting the audience with sound and motion. The seven dancers here are dressed (by Santo Loquasto like mutilated survivors of the apocalypse or the ragged remains from the night of the Jiving dead. Twitching in prolonged spasms, clawing at one another furiously, they stomp and shudder and writhe, while Tom Rawe follows them with a portable television camera, his eerily angled shots flashed on a large screen hung in the rear of the bare stage. This end-of-the-world vision, performed to mercilessly clanging, pounding New Wave music and completed with a slumping into exhaustion or death by the two remaining dancers on stage, continues Tharp's fascination with the possibilities of video in dance and her obsession with the shambles of 20th-century life, which she expressed earlier in her full-length "The Catherine Wheel." As a vision, it's already a cliche; the dance's mixture of video and live performance is confusing to viewers, forcing them to miss one while paying attention to the other.

But, oh, the power of those dancers. FROM A FEAST of superb dancing, here are some other moments of glory. In the gloriously witty "Baker's Dozen," set to the Jazz piano of Willie "The Lion" Smith, after the sensational Jumps and lifts and flings and mass swoops across the stage by six couples dressed in white, Richard Colton kneels alone in center stage, smiling serenely as he slowly shimmies to the music. In the first half of "Brahms' Paganini," Whitener in a devilishly challenging solo offers an astounding display of virtuoso dancing, sliding onto the floor, rising with unbelievable ease and coming out of impossible spins and turns with the grace and eloquence that only a great dancer can summon. Finally, in "Eight Jelly Rolls," with seven of the Tharp women nattily dressed in black-tie ensembles designed by Kermit Love, Christine Uchida skitters hilariously in and out of Jelly Roll Morton's "Black Bottom Stomp," her whole body electrified by the energy of the music, until she staggers backward off stage.

A few seconds ahe re-emerges, trying vainly to keep up with the snappy group steps of the six other women, but falling and sprawling in even more hilarious stylized exhaustion. Absolutely wonderful. Local Hero troupe had enough virtuoso dancing in it for a dozen companies, enough creative juice for a score of choreographers. The delights and the mysteries Just kept rushing along. The programs in the Auditorium Theatre contained Tharp's two latest works, far removed from each other in content, yet each illustrating why she is such a unique and ever intriguing artist "Sinatra Songs" is a surefire hit and a small masterpiece, to boot.

Performed in a black space, its 10 dancers dressed sleekly in formal wear by Oscar de la Renta, this sublime ballroom ballet offers heavenly dancing to five recordings by Frank Sinatra. If angels dance, this is the way they must do it: elegantly, precisely, confidently and Joyfully. WOMEN IN swirling skirts fall Into the arms of their flawless partners, complicated steps and breathtaking lifts sail past without strain or effort. William Whitener zips around the flaring red gown of Jennifer Way, waiting to capture her in an embrace as Sinatra swings to ''Forget Domani." MIN kWm AT MOADMMV NORTH sniffing each other's behind and Cheech being squirted in the face by a hotel bidet. I guess the appeal of Cheech and Chong must be that old standby of film comedians upsetting the natural order of things through a disrespect for authority. And, of course, the dope smoking scenes still get a laugh, especially when the boys get totally stoned. BUT THE filmmaking Is so sloppy and so ugly in "Smokin" that one would expect even the most loyal audience to demand more. Yet how should a young audience respond to a movie that offers a fantasy sequence without rhyme or reason? One would hope that even fans could spot a sloppily made film with ugly, grainy photography that concludes with 20 minutes of an Amsterdam concert just slapped on the end of the picture.

"Smokin" indicates Cheech and Chong's disrespect for their own audience and makes some of their other miserable films look good by comparison. Rating for "Smokin" at outlying theaters: 1 star. 400 "vxsr 2T "QAHDHI" 7:23 mm'- is merely a random assortment of gags followed by 20 minutes of European concert footage all strung together on the flimsiest of premises, that the boys are the only invited guests to arrive at the Amsterdam Film Festival. At the Amsterdam airport and at their hotel, they are promptly mistaken for Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton, even though some well-wishers are holding "Best Little Whorehouse" posters featuring pictures of the real Burt and Dolly. But, okay, we'll grant Cheech Chong their premise.

That much any movie deserves. What follows, however, are some of the most lame Jokes ever put on film. The film's title, for example, refers to dog feces. Other gags involve the boys being forced to nave sex more often than they would like with a lusty maid, the boys imitating dogs by civcm 1.75 200 VL 1ST SHOWS 8TART1 "QANPHI" pqi7c -focKY mr too 10WR WOLF MoQUDOe tcvraadwi awafTrk, BErTrnANO TAVEHNtfeR COUP DETOnCriOrf SaI ktzxm Te7 MAX OUQAN TMVanNat 9 McCLURQ COURT FORD CITY PORTAGE GOLF MILL Chicago Chicago Chicago Nile EDENS TOWN a COUNTRY BARRINGTON SQUARE Northern Arlington Heightt HoKman Estate STRATFORD SQUARE FOX FIELD OGDEN MALL 6 Btoomingoaa St. Chatte Napervita CROSSROADS CHICAGO RIDGE MALL BREMEN MarrnVW.
