Resting at Hlrsch Memorial Chaoel. 183d and f- By James Kane '( A WOMAN AND a 3-year-old boy died and four other persons, three of them young children, were injured Tuesday morning in a fire in a townhouse in Elgin. Killed were Patricia Bixby, 22, and Christopher Wheeler, who was an overnight visitor with his mother and a brother at the Bixby townhouse in a six-unit building at 336 S. Belmont St. in the suburb.

4 Elgin firemen crawled through heavy smoke to' find -Bixby and the boy in second floor bedrooms. The victims were taken, to St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin, where the woman was pronounced dead, and the boy died a short time later. IN FAIR CONDITION in the hospital were Bixby's two sons, Patrick, 16 months, and Paul, the Wheeler boy's mother, Marilyn DeBose, 27, and another building, and Robert Rakow, 627 Grand who pulled up in his van after seeing the fire: Rakow said he broke down. the front door, but that "flames shot out preventing anyone from entering before the arrival of firemen.

"She DeBose wanted to go back in, but he Dechaud grabbed her by the arm and blouse and held her back," said Rakow. "You could see iii the picture window that the whole first floor' was engulfed in flames the rooms, the stairs. It was going like crazy. I knew if wc went in there, it would have been the end for us, too. We didn't know what to do.

We felt so helpless." BOTH MEN TRIED to use a garden hose to fight the fire but were unable to hook it up because the water faucet was of a vandal-proof type. Rakow, an employee, of the Fox Valley Fire and Safety Equipment Elgin, seized a ladder from his van and put it up to the second floor window, but flames kept him from entering. Elgin firefighters Lt. Stephen Bone and Patrick Hildrich, wearing breathing equipment, crawled on their hands and knees through heavy smoke to the second floor where Patricia Bixby and Christopher Wheeler were found in separate bedrooms. Another firefighter, Lt.

Robert F. Smith, came through an upstairs window to assist in the rescue attempt. "You couldn't see your hand in front of your face," said Bone. Deputy Elgin Fire Chief Gerald Knust said the fire apparently started in wiring in a lamp plugged into an outlet in the living room. Bixby's husband, Paul, was at work when the fire started at about 8 a.m., officials sald.
