Chicago Tribune, Wednesday, June 8, 1983 Adam home computer quicldy becomes apple of Coleco's eye By Charles Storch COLECO INDUSTRIES whose stock had been soaring with the introduction of its Adam home computer system, told a meeting of securities analysts in Chicago on Tuesday that it expects record earnings this year and next despite competition and "chaotic conditions" in the home-computer and video-game fields. Although Adam has received good notices since its debut here Saturday, Arnold Greenberg, Coleco president and chief executive, cautioned analysts not to go overboard in assessing the product's impact on Coleco's results this year. "We factored in Adam when we made our earlier prediction" of a "very significant" increase in profits irom the record $44.9 million, or $2.90 a chare, in 1982, Greenberg said. "Please don't factor in Adam twice." ADAM TURNED Wall Street into a paradise on Earth for Coleco, whose stock jumped a share in the last week, including a $9 jump, to $60, on Monday. But it was paradise lost Tuesday, when Coleco fell $4.50, to $55.50, on the New York Stock Exchange during the broad stock market dcclin6.

Speaking at the International Summer Consumer Electronics Show, which runs through Wednesday at McCor-mick Place, Greenberg declined to give precise projections for 1983 and 1984. Referring to the "uncertainty and chaotic conditions" of price-cutting in the video-game and computer industry and of major losses by some Coleco competitors, Greenberg said, "If we can do that" show substantial increases in earnings and revenues "while all about us are losing their heads, I will say this is a wonderful year." COLECO'S ADAM Is slated to begin shipments to stores in late August. It is being billed as the first "complete, usable and simple" home computer system. With a suggested retail price of about $600, Adam offers in one package a keyboard, high-speed memory, a daisy-wheel printer allowing interchangeable typefaces and letter-quality printing, Improved video game-playing capabilities, built-in software and a central processor that can store up to 80,000 characters of information. Coleco claims consumers would pay more than $600 to buy other firms' components that match Adam's capabilities.

Coleco anticipates competitors will soon try to bring out systems to match Adam. "Our expectations for Adam aren't based on the naive assumption that we will be out there all alone," Greenberg said. "But by being out there early, we hope to continue to maintain a large and growing share of this industry." ON MONDAY, Atari a Warner Communications unit, introduced four personal computers in Chicago, including the 600XL model that will be sold for $600 in a package that includes a letter-quality printer that it says is twice as fast as Adam's. Morton Handel, Coleco executive vice president for administration and finance, said that Atari's 600XL "looked to most of the world like a weekend packaging job. It's really not comparable" to Adam.

But an Atari spokesman said his firm's announcement "was thought of months ago. It just so happens Coleco came out with something similar to us." BARBARA RUSSELL, an analyst with Kidder, Pea-body Co. who attended the Coleco meeting, said afterwards that Adam "is clearly the standard currently for the all-inclusive home computer." Coleco, she said, "has a window to operate as a unique supplier of a soup-to-nuts consumer system with a significant amount of memory. And that daisy-wheel printer should be a strong seller." Greenberg said Adam will be assembled and packed at Coleco facilities in the United States. Some Adam components "will not be made in-house," he said.
