.20 11.39 66 A7 10 .94 14 SHASTA BEVERAGES' new Capri Sua Is really doing number In the single-strength fruit drink busi-1 ness. Moved Into new markets this spring, this noncarbo-nated fruit drink packaged in a foil pouch reportedly has been selling at least IV i truckloads a day at area Dominick'i and Jewel stores combined. That astonishing volume an estimated 2,800 cases should make the folks very happy at Shasta's parent, Consolidated Foods Corp. "It's the hottest item I've seen for a new drink of this type since I've been in the business," says a veteran Chicago supermarket chain executive. THE PORTABILITY and convenience iftf package, Its novelty (the free-standing pouch comes with a plastic straw), extensive promotion and "hitting the market at the right time" are cited as major reasons for Capri Sun's popularity.

1 Capri Sun, which was tested initially two years ago in orange, lemonade, apple and fruit punch flavors, had been doing well in tests and had expanded markets by the beginning of 1962. This spring Capri Sun was moved into the Cnicago market and other areas accounting for about SO percent of the country. In only half the country, Capri Sun by early May had an 8.5 percent market share of a $750 million-a-year fruit drink business that Includes such heavy hitters as Coca-Cola Foods' Hi-C and Del Monte's Hawaiian Punch. (All the drinks are 10 percent fruit Juice.) PRIOR TO CAPRI Sun's expanded distribution, Hi-C had 24 percent and Hawaiian Punch had 10 percent While officials of San Francisco-based Shasta say they have expanded the market with Capri Sun, indications are that this new item has carved into the business of Hi-C and Hawaiian Punch and other single-strength Juice labels. i "The powder drink mixes (like Kool Aid and Wyler) also have been hurt by Capri says another; Chicago grocer.

Capri Sun's Chicago area market share of the fruit' drink business presently exceeds 15 percent. ONCE CAPRI SUN becomes a national product further distribution will be completed by yearend the drink figures to be right up there with Hi-C and Hawaiian Punch In market shares. Shasta is working on a new grape flavor that will be Introduced later this year or in early 1983. Capri Sun's success will force the competition to counter with other packaging including aspectic' (shelve-stable) packs and promotional strategies. 99 4 99.12 13.64 ,90.2 91.30..
