"We can solve the funding problem when 'Fiddler on the Roof makes enough money," Monahan said, "but we still need somebody to come forward with a large warehouse or other building at a reasonable fee which we can convert to a comfortable theater seating approximately 200." Since the group is registered as nonprofit, donations are tax-deductible, he added.

Workers hurried to finish their task including construction of 60,000 square feet of new shopping space and a roof to enclose the entire structure in time for reopening, but shoppers then found only about half the mall's 64 stores open. Originally a single strip of individual stores along Van Nuys Boulevard just north of Roscoe Boulevard in Panorama City, Panorama Mall for many years followed much of the rest of the central Valley in a slow decline brought on by a quarter-century of use. $7-Million Improvements That changed in 1979, when the MaceRich a Santa Monica-based real estate development firm, teamed up with Connecticut General Mortgage and Realty Investments Co. to buy the mall for $5.8 million dollars and renovate it.

That renovation consisted of $7 million in cosmetic improvements and new construction, including the addition of a second strip of stores and a roof over the mall walkway. Individual owners agreed to remodel the interiors of their stores. The mall, expanded to 145,000 square feet from the THE HOME COMPAI1Y 8920 INDEPENDENCE AVE. CANOGA PARK OVER 35 YEARS IN THE CONTRACTING BUSINESS original 89,000, also was attached to a nearby department store, The Broadway, which is independently owned. The renovation which disrupted business for many of the stores for almost 10 months, is expected by the developer to greatly increase business in the mall.

"It already has, to tell you the truth," claimed a spokeswoman for the shopping center. "Last weekend, the place was packed." Skylights, Potted Plants Centered in an area that includes three other freestanding department stores Robinson's, Ohrbach's and Montgomery Ward's within a block of one another, the expanded mall includes 64 shops and kiosks. All but three shops and one kiosk were leased by the time the mall officially opened, according to mall management. Inside, the mall is dominated by a large stainless steel sculpture of intertwining rings by Sebastian Trovato. Skylights and potted plants give the indoor mall an outdoor feel.

"It's smaller than a lot of them," said a mall spokeswoman. "It's intimate, people tell us; they say they like it because they don't feel lost inside." Panorama Mall is the second regional shopping center to open its doors in little more than two weeks. The first, the larger $60-million Sherman Oaks Galleria, had its opening Oct. 30.
