To Rodgers, the 10,000 meters is a sprint, He won his third Boston Marathon on April 16 in 2:09.26, an American record. A man of modest physical dimension, Rodgers must be all lung and heart. He runs the marathon at the rate of 4:55 per mile.

What surprises Rodgers is that so many folks will show up at a starting line to run a marathon, which stretches 26 miles 385 yards. "Really," he said Friday, "sometimes I'm surprised that I'm running marathons. Some 3,000 runners were expected at the starting line at 7 a.m. "The crowds don't really bother me," he said. There is a reason why the mobs of weekend runners do not bother him. There are no crowds where Bill Rodgers runs. In front.

Rogers is undefeated in road races this year, though he warns that he is not in peak form for the distance. He is held in such esteem that President Carter invited him to dinner this week. Among the other guests were the prime minister of Japan and actor Peter Falk. Mr. Carter, a jogger himself, inquired as to how many strides Rodgers takes per breath, and Rodgers was puzzled.

He had never contemplated such intricacies. Should he lose today, it will probably be because he has been I thrown off stride pacing his breath. Mr. Carter did not ask him for his advice on the energy crisis, and that was too bad. Bill Rodgers gets very high mileage with his resources.

Slow Starter: Kellen Winslow, the Chargers' No. 1 pick in this week's National Football League draft, did not play organized football until his senior year in high school. His chronology: Grade 7-He wanted to play. His coach wanted him to play. His mother would not let him.

No football. Grade 8 Teachers were on strike. No football. Grade 9 He had lost interest. Grade 10-He went out for the team, but two-a-day workouts discouraged him.

Grade 11 He had a job paying $6.55 an hour sorting boxes for United Parcel. "I had a chance to be a supervisor," he said. "I could take the sure thing or play football and maybe get a scholarship. I flipped a coin, took a gamble and ended up here." Winslow earned that scholarship at Missouri and became, in the Chargers' estimation, the No. 1 senior in the 1979 crop.

United Parcel's loss is the Chargers' gain. Winslow arrived in San Diego Friday. He had packed rather lightly, but it would seem likely he will be able to make a trip to a tailor in a few days. Indeed, the Chargers had already fit him with a jersey with the number 1 on it. That will not be his number, but was merely symbolic of where they picked him in the draft.

Winslow seemed loose and relaxed in the give-and-take with the press, but did not deny the presence of some apprehension. "You wonder if you're worth all the praise and recognition," he said. "There's pressure on the first-round pick. They don't want you to come in and sit around for three years." The Chargers do not project such a future for Kellen Winslow. His heroes are Riley Odoms of Denver and Dave Casper of Oakland, players with whom the Chargers are quite familiar.

They feel they have a man who will be a hero to tight ends in the future. cord and dust cover 95 $119 95 Tax FREEWH PRICE MODEL 1500 Wild Card WAC: It might figure that San Diego State would be appalled that it has to play a Pacific 10 team, Arizona, and have it count in the Western Athletic Conference football standings next fall. "Looking at the schedule," coach Claude Gilbert said, "this was about the only way to do it." San Diego State and Hawaii play one less WAC game than their brethren next fall, mainly because they do not play each other. Gilbert said there was three alternatives leave Hawaii games out of the standings, figure the championship on percentage or declare a wild-card team. Alternative A would have been a bit unfair, like inviting someone to a party and not letting them dance. And Alternative could have hurt the Aztecs should they lose the same number of games as a team that was fortunate enough to have won one more.

So it became a matter of identifying the wild-card team. It was to be an Aztec home game, so the choice was from among Wisconsin of the Big 10, independent Miami (Fla.) and Arizona of the Pac 10. None will be picnics. Rumors of the Day: Most of the National Basketball Assn. conversations these days relate to Bill Walton's destination, but a couple of interesting topics have surfaced along the East Coast.

And both involve the Clippers. One would have Randy Smith going to Philadelphia for Doug Collins. The other would have Kermit Washington going to Boston for Bob McAdoo. Irv Levin, the Clippers' owner, professes that he has not heard such rumors or been a party to such negotiations. "There's always interest on the part of various teams in Kermit," he said.

"We get calls all the time. He's a player very much in demand." The others are also "name" players. Either trade would stimulate considerable controversy. Now, however, they appear to be merely intriguing conversation. Mt.

Carmel Earns 10-6 Win or Should That Be Unearns? Pram a Times Stall Wrlttr SAN DIEGO-Nine unearned runs enabled Mt. Carmel to beat Orange Glen Friday, 10-6, and pull to within one-half game of the lead in the Avocado League East. Orange Glen (7-2) committed nine errors, seven in the last two innings, to blow a 4-3 lead. When last those two teams had met, Orange Glen committed no errors and was a 2-0 winner. In a similar game in the Grossmont League, Granite Hills was a 10-3 winner over Monte Vista in a scrap between teams with playoff hopes.

There were 10 errors and 10 unearned runs in that game. Madison beat Morse, 2-1, in the City Eastern League.
