Cos Angeles Sfanee Friday, September 11, 1981 Part III 1 9 Sockers Meet Sting in NASL Semifinal The Day in Spxnrts Results, Facts, Figures By MATT MITCHELL, Times Staff Writer Golf High School Football Basoball Standings SAN DIEGO For the past two years, the upstart San Diego Sockers knocked out the favored Chicago Sting from the North American Soccer League playoffs. Saturday night, they'll be out to do the same thing for a third time. Chicago, on three goals in the final 10 minutes, gained the semi-final berth against the Sockers with a 4-2 win over Montreal Thursday night. The Sockers had advanced Wednesday night with a 3-1 decision over Jacksonville as both series went to the third game of a best-of-three series. It's the third year in a row the Sockers have reached the semis.

In their first two trips they lost in tie-breaking games each time to just miss the Soccer Bowl. Chicago, with a 23-9 regular season record, was the champion of the Central Division while the Sockers finished with a 21-11 mark to win the Western Division. The Sting will have the home field advantage, which they'll welcome since San Diego is 18-2 at home this year. One of those losses, however, came on a disputed 1-0 contest with Chicago. The other semi-final round, also a best-of-three series, matches the Cosmos and Ft.

Lauderdale. The Sockers' first game, to be played at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium, will begin at 7 p.m. to accommodate a national telecast on the cable sports network, ESPN. Sockers officials indicated thurs-day the game may be blacked out in San Diego. The series will shift to Chicago for a Wednesday night game and if a third meeting is necessary, it will be Monday, Sept.

21 just five days before Soccer Bowl '81 in Toronto. The Sockers will be without 23-goal scorer Mike Stojanovic again, but Stojan-ovic gained two league honors Thursday. The burly forward, who is suffering from a broken jaw, was named the North American player of the year, an award that includes only citizens of the United States and Canada. And Stojanovic joined goalkeeper Volkmar Gross, defender Nico Rohmann and midfielder Julie Veee on the third team all-star club voted by the NASL players. I have to decide how much my skills have deteriorated." Cleveland's defensive backs found they were betting into a straight flush Monday night.

Joiner yawned and characterized his performance as "a little sluggish." After all, an old guy takes a few games to get going. "You can't play 13 years and not lose something," he insisted. "It's a very physically and mentally demanding sport. That was a tiring game the other night, and the soggy field made my legs heavy." That accounted, presumably, for the fact that he only gained 143 yards on four receptions in the third period. Dallas' Danny White passed for 145 in an entire GAME Sunday and rates second among the NFC passers.

One of Joiner's receptions was a 51-yarder on the first play following a Cleveland touchdown. The score was 27-14 at the time, and most of the 78,904 partisan fans had one foot in the stadium and one foot in the car. They were a bit reticent to leave because of the Browns' Cardiac Kid comebacks. That play led to a rather swift Charger touchdown, and sent the multitudes home. "We wanted to keep the momentum," Joiner said, "and keep that crowd quiet.

You can't let up. Not in the NFL." Dan Fouts had three receivers down-field on the play. It clicked with such precision drop back, cock the arm, fire and catch that it looked as if Fouts had Joiner in mind all the way. That was not the case. "It's up to me to find out which guy is open," Fouts said, "and Charlie was in the perfect spot at the right time." These are men who have played together since Joiner came to the Chargers as a rather unheralded journeyman in 1976.

Fouts was a young quarterback with a struggling team. They have grown together, and the team has flourished. "We know exactly what we want to do," Fouts said. "As the play is unfolding, 95 of the time he knows where I expect him to be and I know where he's going to be. That just comes from playing togeth-er.

And it is not as easy as it sounds. Fouts could be keying on the strong safety and Joiner on the cornerback and free safety. They work on different parts of the puzzle, but they have been doing it together for so long that they come up with the right picture. "We don't look at the same things," Joiner said, "but we see the same things." Fouts is constantly amazed by his colleague. "I don't know why he's so much better than he was when I first saw him," Fouts said, "but he is.

I've never seen him better." Joiner suggests one primary factor he continues to be successful. His knees are well now, and knees must be well if one is going to dart through defensive secondaries with the youthful abandon to match his ageless guile. "If I have a real hard day with a lot of running," he said, "I'll ice them down. But I'm not having any problems with them." He might have been tempted to knock on wood, but that is not his style. Hard work is his style.

And maybe that is really his secret. "I go out during the week and work as hard as I can," he said. "I try to practice the same way I play. Games come a little easier that way." "He's always doing something," Zam-pese said. "I love to see the young guys watch Charlie Joiner.

He runs his routes' very hard in practice, even when he's running the other team's plays for the defense. Some guys let up then, but not Charlie. He's in better shape than anybody." Zampese is the man who coaches wide receivers, and he chuckled when asked what Joiner is like during the meetings. "There aren't too many things I can talk about," Zampese said, "that Charlie doesn't already know." Indeed, Charlie Joiner is a serious man who very much enjoys the mental part of his game. He is very congenial without being happy-go-lucky, or given to emotional highs and lows.

He walks through crowds almost as unobtrusively as he slips through defensive secondaries. "I've always been a very shy person," he said. "I'm the person at a party who sits and listens or stands and watches." He is more likely to be caught at a party back home in Houston than in San Diego. "They love Earl Campbell in Houston," he said, "but the fans there would like more versatility. They're always asking me if we would trade Fouts for Kenny Stabler or if they could trade for John Jefferson or Kellen Winslow.

I say, 'Are you crazy? Those are the main characters in our big act out Those guys when Jefferson is playing, of course and another gent named Charlie Joiner. Whisper that, though, because Joiner wants the opposition to think he's retired. Or at least should be. CIF NONLEAGUE Mater Dei 16. Volleyball Women U.8.-JAPAN SERIES At Portland United Stetes d. Japan, 15-12, 15-1. 1 11 ic MURRAY: Color This Slider Blue right on top of you, you realize it's a guy with a knife." Now that Vida Blue has come up with a second pitch with a knife in it, is it likely that the commissioner of baseball will look the other way now if he were to be traded? Or did the commissioner just feel that the San Francisco Giants could not possibly have hurt the competitive balance unless the entire 1927 Yankees moved in? The San Francisco Giants, you see, have the finely honed competitive balance of the 1950 St. Louis Browns. But Vida Blue, who has now won 178 games, can take comfort in the fact that for one shining moment back there, baseball had either to find a higher league for him or make him stay in a dungeon at Oakland.

Anything else would have wrecked the grand old game. No one else ever had that kind of compliment paid to him by the game. Continued from First Page "the pitch that got Babe Ruth's record broken." Mis-thrown, it is a perfect "gopher" pitch. It isn't as if Vida's fastball has now become a milk run, or comes up to the plate like something thrown off a mail car in a sack. "It has lost some movement," Vida admits.

"But you can hardly pick your teeth while watching it approach. It's still in the 90-93 mile an hour range. I can't overpower the hitters the way I used to but, on my good night, they'd better have that bat moving." The really distressing part of Blue's slider for a hitter is, it looks like a fastball, it acts like a fastball until all of a sudden, the hitters realize it's an impostor. "It's almost like you see this nice little old lady coming," John McNamara once observed. "And then, when she gets.
