The Intrepid will be outfitted at a cost of $14 million as a giant sea-air-space museum and tied up at Manhattan's Pier 86 South, jutting into the Hudson River. In one of his last acts as president, Jimmy Carter with congressional approval donated the carrier to the nonprofit Intrepid Museum Foundation.

The last formality was cleared recently when Navy Secretary John Lehman officially turned over the 900-foot Intrepid to Zachary Fisher, the New York builder who founded the Intrepid Foundation. Refitting This Summer The Intrepid is now berthed at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. It will be towed to a Bayonne, N.J., shipyard this summer for overhauling and refitting as a museum. It is scheduled to go on exhibit before the end of the year. Commissioned in 1943, the Intrepid took part in many World War II battles in the Pacific.

It survived a direct hit by a Japanese kamikaze off Okinawa on April 16, 1945. The Intrepid also saw action during the Vietnam War and served twice as the prime recovery vessel during space shots by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Astronaut John Young, who was to pilot the space shuttle Columbia, was plucked out of the ocean by the Intrepid on March 23, 1965, after a voyage in space aboard his "Molly Brown" Gemini capsule. The Intrepid museum, a permanent exhibit, will include: An array of full-size aircraft on deck. A theater giving the viewer the feeling of flight and carrier activity.
