He started the final three games in 1998 and is OSU Football Cornell is still recovering from off-season reconstructive knee surgery and hopes to return by mid-October. Newson broke his left leg in an automobile accident on Friday and is out for the season. NEW LIGHTS: The installation of a new $500,000 lighting system at Reser Stadium should be completed this week. Money from the project came from Fox Sports Net, which no longer will need temporary lights for night games broadcast from Reser Stadium.

The new system includes four new poles in each corner of the stadium, lights on the roof of the press box, and will increase the foot candle power by 333 percent, from 30 to 130. See 'OSU'B3 NOT REPORTING: Three players who signed letters of intent this past February did not qualify for admission to OSU, leaving the Beavers with 81 players on scholarship. Not qualifying were defensive back Chad Carpenter, a transfer from Long Beach City College; freshman wide receiver Doug Gabriel of Orlando, and defensive end Sean Phillips of Pasadena High in Claremont, Calif. OSU expects 102 players on the roster when the full team reports on Thursday, 80 scholarship athletes and 42 walk-ons. The Beavers will be without junior guard Jared Cornell and red-shirt freshman wide receiver James Newson, both scholarship players.

Chryst apparently allowed Bryant, a transfer from the City College of San Francisco, to drive his car from California to Corvallis when Bryant moved here last summer for preseason workouts. He also allowed Bryant to live in his house briefly. Both are against NCAA rules, but are not considered major violations because OSU gained no competitive advantage. Bryant had signed a binding letter of intent the previous February. Speculation is that Bryant, who started the first eight games in 1998 before missing the balance of the season with a back injury, may be forced to sit out the Sept 4 opener at Nevada and perhaps the Sept 11 home opener with Fresno State as a penalty.

If that happens, the Beavers Bryant could miss two games due to minor violations By BROOKS HATCH Gazette-Times reporter Oregon State athletic director Mitch Barnhart will announce today what, if any, NCAA penalty the Beavers will receive for several minor rules violations in their football program. The violations occurred last summer and involve senior quarterback Terrance Bryant and former offensive coordinator Paul Chryst, now an assistant coach with the San Diego Chargers. No. 1 on the depth chart heading into fall camp, which opens today for freshmen and transfers and on Thursday for veterans. The other quarterbacks, sophomore Nick Stremick, redshirt freshman Tyler Thomas and true freshman Shayne House, have never taken a snap in a varsity game.

No problem if you show up on a bicycle at Safeco Field. The Seattle Mariners' new $517 million stadium comes with its very own bicycle valet parking. It works like a coat-check room: hand over your bike, get a ticket, and an attendant stows the bike and retrieves it for you later.

"That's very cool," Seattle Mayor Paul Schell said. "That's the best way to get to the game." The fenced-off cage with room for 165 bicycles was originally intended as a do-it-yourself rack. But several days after the July 15 stadium opening, a bicyclist rode in and banged his head on a low concrete beam. The Mariners decided to leave the bike-parking to the professionals. A SPIRITED STAND: Sprinters Tommle Smith and John Carlos are remembered for their clenched fist demonstration on the victory stand at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

In HBO's documentary, "Fists of Freedom: the Story of the '68 Summer Games," which debuts Thursday, Lee Evans talks about his own actions on the victory stand after he won the 400-meter race two days later. "People asked me, 'Why were you guys smiling so much on the victory stand?" Evans said. "And I said, 'Man, somebody was threatening to shoot me. "We played a lot better today" than Saturday's 1-0 victory over Central Coast in the semifinals, Firebirds coach Tony Vandermeer said. "Even though they scored the first goal, we pretty much controlled the match." Ken Strain gave the 86ers their only lead with a goal at the 17 minute mark. Tedder assisted on the two Firebirds' goals in the first half as Capodanno scored 17 minutes later and Bryan Ritchie added another goal at the 39 minute mark for a 2-1 halftime lead. "That first (86ers') goal put us in some doubt, but we played dominant the rest of the way," Vandermeer said. "We got a strong game from everyone." Howes, who scored the lone goal in Saturday's victory, found the net first in the second half, scoring three minutes in on another Tedder assist and in the 80th minute from a Peter Kavanagh pass.

Capodanno ended the scoring at the 88 minute mark on an assist from Scott Tomlin. The team got out of the scrimmage without any major injuries, although fullback Mack Strong sprained an ankle, Holmgren said. In addition, injured running backs Ricky Watters and Ahman Green may be able to practice teginning Monday, Holmgren said. They are needed because the top rusher Sunday was Michael Black, who ran nine times for 19 yards. Receiver Joey Galloway remains a holdout.

Second-yard player Robert Wilson took advantage of extra playing time to catch four passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. Receiver Mike Pritchard snagged three passes for 55 yards and two touchdowns. COUGAR CONNECTION: Former Washington Husky Brock Huard took first snaps as a Seahawk, and on the first three plays he went to Cougars. He handed off to former Washington State running back Michael Black on his first snap, and fired a pass to former Cougar receiver Chris Jackson on the third play. Both will see playing time in the Seahawks' first preseason game, next Saturday against Buffalo in the Kingdome, Holmgren said. "We threw well. The receivers made some nice catches," said Holmgren, who stood about 15 yards behind the offense for much of the scrimmage. But he was concerned about numerous procedural penalties, especially in the early going. "They are correctable," Holmgren said.

CHENEY, Wash. Jon Kitna threw for 236 yards and four touchdowns during a Seattle Seahawks scrimmage on Sunday that drew an overflow crowd of 8,400 fans. Several players commented on the big crowd that came to watch a glorified practice at Woodward Stadium on the East-em Washington University campus. "This is three times the crowds we had in college," said Kitna, a product of Central Washington University in Ellensburg. "It felt like a game," said tight end Christian Fauria, who caught three passes for 55 yards.

"We ran out here all fired up." Kitna completed 17 of 23 passes without an interception. "Remember, in a scrimmage he knows he's not going to get hit hard," Coach Mike Holmgren said.
