Inherent insulation properties are the same, but the quality of design,, color and texture has been completely overhauled and upgraded. New, wider selections of insulating siding styles and colors, along with added texture, are permanently embossed right at the factory; no painting is required; ease of maintenance is a boon to the busy'homeowner. . Buyers today are not only color and quality conscious," they, demand product versatility. The rich, two-toned effect that natural stone or brick combined with, siding gives any home—whether new construction or modernized—is a forward trend. Insulating siding is ar'chjtectur ally compatible .with all exterior sidewall materials.. Striated panels in clapboard design, surfaced with colorful mineral granules, offer the rich textured 1 look with deep shadowlines that people want. West On U.S. 24 Spruce-Up Programs Launched Today, "spring cleaning" has come to encompass far more than a strenous "scrubing operation." New painting and decorating, new lighting fixtures, new floor coverings, touch-up jobs on siding and roofing, and a host of repair and improvement jobs are^all part of a well-integrated program aimed iit'maintaining a high standard of appearance and livability in the home. Like any other large and expensive piece of equipment, a home should be inspected periodically if it .is to be kept in smooth operating condition. Since the winter months usually do the most damaging, 'spring is the best time for making a seasonal check- tip and attending to the necessary lepairs and other.little jobs about the house that will make it a better place in which to live. Make Reipairs Promptly ' Minor repairs should be made promptly. Failure to do so will dften result in more serious break- clowns later on — may even necessitate an expensive major overhaul that might have been avoided. Here is a convenient guide lo j; '.'spring inspection" that will Determine .how you can step up the appearance and livability of your home'. 1. The Ouiside. This is your home's face to the public. Check roofing and siding. Small cracks, peeling, etc. often require little wore -than minor repairs or repainting. The new latex paints that cover exteriors with a single c oat make it far easier than heretofore to put a fresh, bright sparkle into a weather-worn home. Moreover; new materials on the Market can sometimes make it cheaper to have new roofing or siding installed than to do a patch job. Money-Saving Features Among the materials that now include new time- and money-saving features are (a) fireproof shingles that protect while they beautify, and (b) sidings that provide insulation, retaining build- heat and cutting fuel bills. Fuel S'avings, over the years, can amortize the cost of the installation, Then there are-.rot-resistant sidings and shingles that provide longer life and beauty for the home. Some sidings have baked- tm decorator colors that never need repainting. 2. Inside the House. A change in the family's size and needs may call for a room addition or interior remodeling. Consider converting the basement to a finished recreation room, or add a finished bedroom or den to the attic to meet expanded far.nily needs. Effect a "change of scene" in any or all rooms via .a new paint job or wallpaper — or a combination of both. Consider new floor coverings, too! 3. The ( Grounds. Even a small backyard can become a happy, modern outdoor living area. New patfy awnings and shelters can iionvert a small comer near the house into a suitable area for nummer relaxation and barbecue I'un. , Beg-Board panels continue to be a "natural" for cabinet doors. The ventilation afforded by the perforations is an added advantage. Some Tips for Amateur Gardeners Wish Harvest Time Visions BY MR. FIX Written for Newspaper Enterprise Assn. You could spend a small fortune on garden tools and slill be poorly equipped. Don't be dazzled by big displays of fancy equipment while .your mind pictures lush harvests of vegetables and the gorgeous colors of abundant flowers. Concentrate on what you will need to do a complete job. Avoid spending the. biggest part or all of your budget on a single-purpose item. N Extra Dollars Highly efficient pressure sprayers for insecticides are woinderful items and you should plan on owning one some, day, but for .the time being, a hand sprayer and a dust gun will do nicely and will [eave you extra dollars for rakes, shovels and spades. To begin with, get a spade, a spading fork, shovel, hoe tir possibly a cultivator hoe, steal rake, .awn rake (broom style), hose nozzle, sprinkler, and the insecticide equipment mentioned above. A lawn mower comes before a [awn .sweeper, and so does a fertilizer spreader. Later on you will want to get a variety of hoes for cultivating and weeding and a long-handled spade. Hose Care A hose reel-will be :t later purchase. Meanwhile, coil your hose in a bushel basket, or hang the coil on a piece of scrap lumber nailed at right angles to a garage wall stud. Round off the sharp edges of :he wood with sandpaper first. Grass shears, small pruning shears and perhaps hedge shears should be high up on the list. Special pruning shears and saws can come later. You'll want a few small hand jarden tools — cultivator!! and ;rowels. Buy heavy duty items, not tools that have been stamped out of sheet metal. A square spade, kept filed to a sharp edge, can double as a lawn edger-until you are ready to invest ,n one, Heft Tools When you pick your loo'ls heft them to'see that they are not too heavy. A tool that's ' uncomfortable to- use is useless. Good tools will last a good many years if cared for s:o skip the so-called bargains—you'll be replacing them in a year cir two. Examine wood handles csirefully for flaws. Don't buy tools if the wooden handles have been, paint ed. Don't paint them yourself. An occasional rubbing with a linseed oil-soaked rag will! keep theni in condition. Stripe Tools Of course you might want to add paint to the extent of putting your name on the tools to remind borrowers that they belong to you. A bold red or orange stripe will also help you spot a rake or hoe that's dropped in the weeds. Investigate Building Codes Nearly all communities exercise some municipal control over building projects, including major jobs of home remodeling, by means of building regulations or codes, which vary. The primo purpose of codes is two-fold: They protect the community interests by specifying the quality,, location, and appearance of construction projects. They protect individials against dangers to life and health from unsafe construction materials and assembly. When remodeling, be sure to invesligate the need of getting a building permit. Plans of the pro? jjosed building project must us-. ually be submitted at the time when applying for a. pc.-vnit. Codes generally are enforced by (he fee-and-pe:rmit system. , . _ CLOSE-CIUARTER TIP When a regular saw frame will., not fit into a work area requiring ;i hacksaw cut, split a heavy dowel in hall' lengthwise.
