JMonday, October 27, 1980 Part III 7 WE DID IT CHARGERS: Cowboys Win A new Ciroi plain piper copier your entire coitpiny en ise for only first time this year he has been under 50 and the four interceptions were obviously costly. It was typical of the game that the biggest gain, the 65 -yard pass to Winslow, ended in a fumble. White, meanwhile, was completing 22 of 34 yards for 260 yards and also ran twice for first downs from punt formations. It was a night when a number of Chargers went out with injuries for parts of the game, including Jefferson, John Cappelletti, Wilbur Young and Glen Edwards. "It was one those nights when nothing worked out," coach Don Coryell said, "but we have no excuses.

Dallas played better." 1995 The next touchdown was almost as easy. Woodrow Lowe ran 16 yards with an intercepted pass. A couple of clipping penalties had pushed the Cowboys back, and White was throwing on third and 14. Lowe's touchdown, the third scoring interception of his career, gave the Chargers a 17-7 lead with 8:30 to play in the half. Cowboys Come Back With Passes Dallas marched back, however, with a drive which consumed almost six minutes.

The touchdown came on a 17-yard pass from White to Butch Johnson, but the big play was a 16-yard pass to Dupree on a third and two. The Chargers' rather well-rested offense had not forgotten how to move the ball during its "vacation." Fouts moved it 64 yards in five plays, all passes, to make the score 24-14. The touchdown came on a nine-yard pass to Winslow. That was to be the Chargers' last hurrah until after the game had escaped them. They got their other touchdown near the end of the game on another Fouts -to-Winslow pass.

Fouts had another big passing game in terms of yardage, passing for 371 yards. White was in punt formation, but the snap was high and he could not get the kick away. So he ran, 12 yards for a first down.

When Newsome punched over from the one, the Cowboys gained a 28-24 lead they never lost. And now the Chargers were ready to stumble and bumble their way out of the game. The turnovers (and their consequences): Muncie fumbled when hit by Randy White at the Charger 20, Dallas taking three plays to score. Danny White was chased as he tried to throw as patterns broke down, but Saldi came back and took the pass near the 12, the line of the scrimmage, and out back to the right acorss the field to the end zone. Muncie fumbled when hit by Aaron Mitchell after a gain of 15, the drive dying just as it reached Dallas territory.

And then the killer. Down 35-24, but not dead, Fouts passed for a gain of 65 yards to Winslow. But Mitchell hit Winslow and caused another fumble, this one recovered by Dennis Thurman of the Cowboys. And then the interceptions. One by Benny Barnes.

One by Wilson. And one by Thurman. Barnes' interception set up White's nine-yard scoring pass to Dupree, while the others simply stopped Charger drives as they desperately attempted to rally. Big Second Period as Usual As is becoming their custom, the Chargers enjoyed a bid second period en route to the halftime lead. They had scored 100 points in the second periods of their first seven games, 104 in the other three quarters.

They scored 21 points in Sunday night's second period. What was amazing was that they managed to score so many points when Dallas usually had the ball in that period. The Chargers ran only three offensive plays ihrough the period's first 12 minutes. The third of those plays came with 10V4 minutes to play and covered 58 yards for a touchdown. It was not a play which went as it was rehearsed.

Fouts passed to Charlie Joiner, but the ball went off his fingertips and hit the helmet of Wilson. It bounced to Jefferson, who ran untouched the remaining 40 yards to the end zone. This was a 65-yard drive that actually covered 80, because Ed White was penalized 15 yards for holding and 15 for illegal procedure. Muncie ran for five of the yards and Fouts passed to Joiner for the other 17. Three plays, a total of 80 yards.
