Bob Klein (84) congratulates Charger teammate John Jefferson for TD catch. Associated Press photo KLEIN RETIRES Continued from First Page Owner Klein was offering a $165,000 contract that he thought ample, suggesting that it would have placed the 33-year-old tight end in a tax bracket considerably above some of the Chargers' younger stars. Player Klein, as represented by Harris, sought a cost of living raise off the $175,000 he interpreted to have been his 1979 salary.

He also sought an inflationary adjustment in deferred pay from a previous contract. Difference in Perception Some of the conflict could well have been caused by the Chargers' stance that Klein's previous $450,000 contract was spread evenly over its three years. Bob Klein perceived it to be broken into increments of $137,500, $137,500 and $175,000. In the player's estimation, he was being asked to take a cut. In the owner's estimation, the tight end was being offered a 10 raise.

The Chargers' only chance to benefit from the former USC star's departure at this point would be to trade him to a club that could induce him to come out of retirement, just as the Chargers did with Klein when he retired from the Rams after the 1976 season. "Mr. Klein told us that Philadelphia had called him about Bob a couple of weeks ago," Harris said, "but we told him we had absolutely no interest in Philadelphia." "Where's Philadelphia?" Bob Klein mused. Somewhere between Paris and San Diego. Pete Rose found it, and an $800,000 a year salary undoubtedly makes it quite bearable for him.

W.C. Fields, apparently, is happier where he is. And so, it seems, is Bob Klein. "My old teammates," he said, "and the coaching staff would like me to play, but management feels differently." Management, to be fair, would undoubtedly like him to play, but not at his price. Real Estate Beckons So Bob Klein now contemplates plunging into the real estate development business with Harris.

His next assignment will be a 100-acre industrial site in Ventura County, rather than a Sept. 7 appointment in Seattle. "I've been preparing for this a number of years," Klein said, "and it's time to move on. I haven't had the problem so many people and so many ballplayers have. I haven't been playing to make a living.

It's just something I've enjoyed doing." He had what was probably his most enjoyable and successful year last fall, with personal season highs in receptions (37), yards gained (424) and touchdowns (5) as he started 14 of the Chargers' 16 games. Kellen Winslow, last season's No. 1 draft pick out of Missouri, had been regarded as the Chargers' tight end of the future. He is now the tight end of the present. PADRES WIN Continued from First Page "How much did Unser's ball miss by, four inches?" Coleman asked.

He was referring to pinch -hitter Del Unser's blast to center field in the ninth inning, with Greg Gross on base, that hit high on the center-field wall, just missing a game-tying home run. Then Coleman defended his last-place club's season of discontent. 52 (tape). Ocean Fishing Report "We've never quit. We go out to win every day. We don't often do it. We've lost a lot of frustrating ball-games, probably more than anyone in the National League," Coleman said.

"I haven't had this much attention in a week and a half," he joked while a host of reporters gathered around him after the game. Coleman said the game's key play came in the Phillies' ninth, when, with two on and none out, the usually reliable Pete Rose not only failed to bunt the runners ahead but finally struck out on a pitch even Rose described as bad. "It was in the dirt," Rose said. "And I shouldn't have swung at it." Rose said he had two good rips at breaking balls up before the third strike. Padres Make Up 5-1 Deficit I The Padres trailed, 5-1, before sending the 11 men to Ihe plate in the fifth.

Salazar opened the inning with a (single and scored on Dave Winfield's 14th home run of the season. Willie Montanez continued the assault on Phillies starter Nino Espinosa, (3-4) with a single to deft. 1 One out later Craig Stimac bunted and was safe on an error by Espinosa. Both runners advanced on an infield out, and Tim Flannery was intentionally walked to load the bases. Pinch hitter Broderick Perkins reached first on an error by shortstop Larry Bowa, Montanez scoring.

Richards then singled off reliever Kevin Saucier, Stimac and Flannery scoring. That brought on another reliever, Dickie Noles, and he gave up Salazar's second hit of the inning, a single that scored Perkins and made it 7-5. Phillies Score 5 in First The Phillies had taken a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Lonnie Smith opened with a single, moved up on a wild pitch by San Diego starter Juan Eichelberger and scored on a single by Rose, who reached second on the throw to the plate. After Mike Schmidt struck out, Bake McBride singled home Rose and then reached second on a single by Manny Trillo.

After Garry Maddox hit into a fielder's choice, Larry Bowa singled home a run to make it 3-0. The Padres intentionally walked Bob Boone to load the bases, but Espinosa spoiled the strategy with a bloop single.
