Before Richard Boone's real life experiences ran the gamut from roughneck.in an oil field to a clerk in an office. He was at one time as unsuccessful as a painter as he was in his attempts as a writer. He held the amateur light-heavyweight boxing championship at college and was a part-time bartender.

At the time he was unsuccessfully attempting to try his hand at art for a living, War started. Boone immediately enlisted in the Navy. He spent four years in the Pacific as an aviation ordnance man, acting as aerial gunner in a torpedo squadron. He considers himself lucky to be alive after being torpedoed on the carrier Intrepid, bombed on the Enterprise, and kamikazied on the Hancock. "There's no question that my real life experience helped me immeasurably in portraying Paladin," Boone says, "How else would I ever be able to take the punishment.

I do in almost every episode. When you see me wallowing in the mud wrestling with some desperado, dirtied from head to toe, it's really me. At the same time, my portrayal would certainly be affected when I dress in the high fashions of the 1870s, the Prince Alberts with ruffled cuffs and frilly shirts, if I wasn't always personally interested in dressing properly at all times." "Such outfits may not be regarded as wholly masculine by modern standards," Boone admits, "but I'm sure that they provided the men who wore them with a psychological lift." If the man of today seems to prefer a less elegant wardrobe, the reasons may well include considerations of finance, as well as taste. "The average cost of those gandy modles I wear in "Have Gun-Will Travel' is about $1,000 an outfit, mainly because of the 3 Locations for Your Convenience Routes 422 West KiUanniac LI 2-2831 Ford Street. Ford City RO 2-2831 Smtb McKean LI tailoring detail that goes into each one." Boone points out.

"Why, that's half of Paladin's fee for a really big Job." To illustrate a point, and sometimes to confound an adversary. Paladin, in almost every episode has had at his tongue's tip a classical quotation. As an example, in one episode, he indulges in a spree of quotations on the subject of women, quoting Lamartine, Shelley and Thackeray, the latter to the effect that "all men who avoid female society have gross tastes." For a western bounty hunter to be so erudite, the paradox would be all the more unbelievable if the one portarying the character were not, himself in real life as erudite. Undoubtedly, it is Boone's versatility which has stood him in such good stead in his portrayal of Paladin, a mercenary champion of the Old West, who is called upon to do an astonishing variety of things in the cause of justice-from dashing across the desert on a camel to bargaining with an Armenian vintner for his daughter's dowry on behalf of a bashful Texan. Ron Ely, who co-stars as diver Mike Madison in "The Aquanauts" adventure series on the CBS TV network, is a notable exception, having reached that status in a few short years. Unknown when he arrived in Hollywood from his native Texas in the spring of 1957, Ely appeared in three major motion pictures within 18 months. first professional acting job was a bit part in "South Pacific." His work in the film version of the hit musical led to a supporting role in "The Fiend Who Walked the West," which starred Stephen McNally. That role, in turn, led to his being cast as the romantic lead opposite Jill St.

John in "The Remarkable Mr. Pennypacker." He has since appeared in numerous television shows including: "Playhouse 90" and "Father Knows Best." Ely was born in Hereford, Texas. His family soon moved to Amarillo and he was educated in that city's public schools. He entered the University of Texas at Austin and planned to major in petroleum engineering. But his love of poetry was destined to alter his plans.

In 1956 he won the Texas State Poetry Reading Championship and earned a scholarship in the University's radio-television course. This, plus an earlier interest in high school dramatics, caused Ely to turn towards an acting career. After one semester at the University. Ely decided to try his luck in Hollywood. English and drama were his best school subjects--science his worst.

He likes to write short stories, but has never submitted any for publication. "I write purely for my own enjoyment and relaxation," he says. In appearance, Ely would appeal to a professional football scout looking for a good offensive end. He is 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 215 pounds. He is married to the former Helen Janet an Amarillo girl he has known since his high school days.
