JMonday, September 29, 1980 Part III Cos Anflelea Stones Chargers Win and Get Muncie Coryell, the offense-minded coach, seemed at the same time a bit frustrated that the offense could not move the ball more consistently, but was appreciative of what the defense had done. "We couldn't control the ball," he said, "and we couldn't move, except when we had the advantage of being set up by the defense. The offense did a good job when it was given the opportunity." Kansas City had, indeed, done an excellent job of defending against the Chargers, but it came up with the same frustrating bottom line. "Look at the 24-7," Barbara said. "That's what counts." Kansas City ultimately switched from Fuller to Tom Clements trying to find an offensive spark, but the Chiefs had had their one big drive.

They moved the ball into Charger territory only once in the second half, but that drive was stopped when Bob Horn recovered a Clements fumble at the Charger 37. As has become the norm, the Charger frontf our gave the opposition quarterbacks a fit There were five sacks for a total of 49 yards, three of them by Fred Dean for 33 yards. Dean, of course, was the fellow who held out and missed the first three games of the season, coming back for last week's game in Denver. "I've really enjoying myself now," he said. "I felt a lot more comfortable this week.

I'm in a little better condition." Johnson Suffers Ankle Injury This was an afternoon when the pass rush might have been inhibited a bit by an ankle injury to Gary Johnson in the second period. Johnson had four sacks last week in Denver and had one Sunday before going out early in the second period. Steve Fuller, for one, noticed no great lessening of the pressure in Johnson's absence. "Their defense is one of the best in the league," the Chief quarterback said, "and the key is the front four. They're so big and they press you so hard.

It's hard to get any kind of consistency against them, and that's what you have to do to win in this league." "The defense is starting to the Chargers' Kelcher said. "The pressure up front is a key to us. When we do our job, it pressures the offense and the quarterback and makes it a little easier for our defensive backs and linebackers. It helps them get interceptions." It might be noted here that Kelcher, a defensive lineman, came up with the only interception Sunday. OADCM NOW! tend 12tM to: fl Exam Kit Continued from First Page The second period, as usual, was the big one for the Chargers. They have scored 118 points through four games this year, and 66 of them have come in the second period. Even that period was a bit of a struggle for them Sunday, as they seemingly played down to the level of the competition. They entered that second period with a 7-0 lead, courtesy of A) a mixup of a Chief snap count; B) Louie Kelcher's ensuing fumble recovery, and C) Cappelletti's three-yard run.

When Chief quarterback Steve Fuller bobbled the snap, Kelcher fell on the ball at the Kansas City 3-yard line. It took all of one play and four seconds for Cappel-letti to get the ball into the end zone. "It was supposed to be a quick count," Fuller said, "and the center thought it was on one." When the quarterback and the ball depart at different times, problems ensue. Chiefs Drive 80 Yards to TD The Chiefs, however, came right back and drove 80 yards to their touchdown. Fuller's passing (and scrambling) and Ted McKnight's running got the ball into the end zone, McKnight going over from the Chiefs had controlled the ball for 7 minutes 12 seconds, an effective "defense" against the Chargers' big-play offense.

After the touchdown, the Chiefs successfully executed an onside kick and the Chargers were still without coming with 2:02 to play in the half. In the final minute of the half, the offense scored all by itself. It took possession at the Charger 42 after a Chief punt and struck for-58 yards in three plays and only 22 seconds. The big play was the first, a 42-yard pass down the middle from Fouts to Jefferson. After an incompletion, Fouts threw for 16 to Winslow for the touchdown.

Once again, Winslow was aligned against a linebacker, this time Gary Spani. Linebackers match up in terms of weight against Winslow, but not in height or speed and both height and speed were factors in the touchdown. Jefferson, Joiner Double-Teamed "They've got to double-team John Jefferson and Charlie Joiner," Winslow said. "Someone's got to be covered one-on-one, and it's usually me." And covering the 6-5, 250-pounder is not guite as enjoyable as spending a Sunday afternoon at the beach. "He's a big tight end with good speed," said Chief defensive back Gary Barbara, "and they use him like a third wide receiver.

We knew he could catch, and we knew he could run with the ball when he caught it He gives them another dimension." With the score 21-7 at the half, the Chargers could enjoy the luxury of going more to a ball-control offense to eat up the clock. They did get the Benirschke field goal after Kelcher intercepted a pass that had been deflected by Wilbur Young. That made the score 24-7, and the remainder of the game was enough to put the crowd of 45,161 to sleep. This time, however, the defense held. "If they had scored that time," Coryell said, "it would have been a dogfight to the end." The struggle continued and it was still 7-7 with little more than three minutes to play in the half when Charger linebacker Jim Laslavic stripped pass receiver Earl Gant of the ball. Hal Stringert picked it up and ran 26 yards to give the Chargers' possession at the Chief 32. Laslavic's Notion Proves Correct "Because of the angle I had, I had the notion that I could strip the ball from him," said Laslavic, a starter in place of the injured Ray Preston. "I spiked the ball when I hit him and Hal was there to pick it up." Fouts passed for 15 to Winslow, Cappelletti ran for 2 and Fouts covered the last 15 on another pass to Win-slow.

A fake to the outside by Winslow turned linebacker Frank Manumaleuga around and left Winslow an open path to the middle and the goal line. "The linebacker," Winslow smiled, "just bit on the move." That was the Chargers' most time-consuming drive of the first half.
