Jaaaes 8aoel Memorial eervlcee will be held for James Samuel Cardelucci, blrthdate Scot 21. 1957. ase 22. By GORDON GRANT Times Staff Writer COSTA MESA-Shipbuilder Dennis Holland's dream, which has tantalized him for 10 long years, seems to be on the brink of coming true. The great 110-foot replica of an 1812 Baltimore clipper he's building in his front yard he laid the keel on May 2, 1970-has attracted the attention of television and motion picture people, and lucrative contracts may be just over the horizon.

"Money," Holland said, "has been the problem right along." Lack of money caused delay after delay in getting the big ship in the 'water. Holland had planned to sail it in the 1976 tall ship Bicentennial parade in New York. But lack of funds meant the ship was not ready. Through the years, Holland has never taken short cuts or fallen back on cheap materials to help his finances. "I've always been picked on by my friends, going back to my high school buddies, for not switching to fiberglass and plywood," he said.

"But I work in oak and fir and mahogany, Beloved husband of Lvnette Car delucci, loving aon of Samuel and Jackie Cardelucci, cherished brother of Hark Cardelucci, paternal grandson of the late Sal-vatore and Lucv Cardelucci. maternal grandson of the late james i ana tunus Agaianian. OARTLAND, James Joseph, husband oi ueuy jeanne uaruana: (atner of Denise Gartland Novoselski, Patricia Gartland Mullins, James like they did 200 years ago. Maybe I was born too late." His refusal to compromise or, on occasion, to accept money under what he considered distasteful circumstances obviously contributed to the financial problem. His ship, named Pilgrim, was endorsed by the Orange County Bicentennial Committee, and later by the California Bicentennial Committee, to represent the state and the county in the 1976 Bicentennial celebration, even though it had not yet been launched.

"The state was going to lend me $5,000 to finish her off," he said. "But then I found out that the money would go first to the historical foundation and then to me, and I'd be paying them back instead of the state. I didn't want to mess with taxpayers' money that way." At about the same time, a man described by Holland as a "Bicentennial promoter type," suggested that, while Pilgrim was on the East Coast during the celebration, it could call at all the port cities between Florida and New York. "He said we could charge people to come aboard and look at her, and we would split the money," Holland said. "I turned him down too.

That's not what the Bicentennial was all about." So instead of taking the easy money, Holland faced the frustrations and uncertainties of his predicament and took odd jobs to keep his dream and his family alive. While his wife, Betty, also had outside work, he used his shipbuilder's skills to make custom doors for homes, to design and build bridges for a developer who had creeks on his land, to install wooden paneling in a lawyer's office. He worked on Pilgrim when he could afford materials lumber and paint that constantly were soaring in cost. When the ship was far enough along, the Hollands moved from the ramshackle little house at the rear of their lot and lived aboard. Their children, Julie Marie, 6, and Heidi Lynn, 3, have known no other home than one of mahogany bunks, a huge main cabin table hung on gimbals, a ship's galley a home whose front door was an opening in the great hull where three planks had been left off to provide access.

Holland was 24 when he laid the keel 10 years ago. He's still youthful looking and clear eyed, still steeped in the lore of the old sailing ships and of the fine workmanship that went into them. His research into vessels of the past culminated in acquiring from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, the specifications for a brigan-Flease Turn to Page 10, Col. 3 PREPARED IN COOPERATION WITH THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CONTINUOUS WEATHER BROADCASTS: VHF 162.55 WEATHER REPORTS, FORECASTS J. uaruana, Barbara Elizabeth Gartland; brother of Mrs.
