35-4ii. IT Allen Hoskins as Farina: His role in "Our Gang" comedies showed that "we're alt just people. OAKLAND, CaW API Allen Hoskins, 59, who played the pig-tailed Farina in the "Our Gang" comedies of the 1920s and '30s, has died of cancer here, his family announced Sunday. Hoskins, who had been retired since the 1940s, died Saturday in Kaiser Hospital after being rushed there in a coma. He had been in and out of the hospital twice since his first cancer surgery in February, said his wife, Franze.

His wife said that at the time of his death he had been involved in starting a radio series. A BOSTON native, the young Hoskins played in 300 comedies made for producer Hal Roach, MGM. Warner and 20th Century-Fox. The last was released in 1938, but time did not tarnish their audience appeal. They now seem to be in perpetual rerun on television.

At 19, after majoring in drama at Los Angeles City College, the former child star said he realized he was "washed out" as an actor. He started working to help handicapped people after World War II. He was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame here in 1975 along with Ruby Dee, Eartha Kitt, Quincy Jones, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Abby Lincoln, and Frederick O'Neal. HOSKINS rejected contentions that his "Our Gang" role perpetuated racial prejudices and stereotypes. "The message, I think, was that we're all just people, sometimes good, sometimes bad." HEARN Am Hearn.
