It's virtually the same story as the original disaster film about a capsized luxury liner with crew and passengers struggling to get out through the ship's bottom, which now has become the top. The premise of the new film is that there is something very valuable located in the now-bowels of the ship, and all sorts of people are trying to get at it, 4 2:30 Sun. Halidava U.F.O.

And when the ship undergoes another tremor, well, there we are again: watching a rag-tag line of Hollywood actors trying to walk along a cheesy, studio-set railing and swim across a cheesy, studio-set pool.

A fourth "Airport" movie is due later this month, so, it's testament to the artistic mendacity and filmmaking ineptness of producer-director Irwin that his boat series won't make it past No. 2. 4l.m.-j:QO-2o-4i;n Q20 p.m. Breaking away BEYOND THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE PO. I Of course, their idea isn't particularly fresh; we've all read about such federal and local operations for a couple of years now.

This might have been a better film if it hadn't taken such a long time coming to the screen. "Hot Stuff" was directed by comic actor Dora De-Luise, the latest graduate of the Mel Brooks comedy school to try his hand at working in front of and behind the camera at the same time. Marty Feld-man and Gene Wilder have made similar stabs at acting-directing, and the result is five mediocre movies. These aren't movies so much as ego trips. These men can be very, very funny in other people's films, but not in their own.

DeLuise is remarkably restrained in "Hot Stuff," playing a veteran cop due to retire in a matter of days. We wait for him to break loose with the comic abandon he has- displayed in "The Twelve Chairs and "The End." No such luck. He and bis burglary unit pals, including policewoman Suzanne Pleshette, take over a crooked pawnshop and begin buying hot merchandise while photgraphing the crooks through a one-way mirror. And that's about all there is to "Hot Stuff," which culminates in a clumsy fight sequence between the town's independent burglars and the local Mafiosi. "Hot Stuff" might be acceptable as a made-for-TV movie, but that's about it.

"Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" has shoddily painted sets; tiny studio-created fires all of the same size; and dialog that could be written by a lst-grader. Sally Field is likely to be nominated next year for an Academy Award for her performance in "Norma it will be amusing when that happens to recall that she starred in "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" in the same year.

Everyone has a price. Field plays a fast-talking passenger on a tugboat that comes to the aid of the capsized ocean-liner Poseidon. Michael Caine is the skipper, and his performance is about as wooden as his tug's hull. The disaster film craze got started in the '70s with the original "Airport," which was a halfway-decent piece of commercial entertainment preying on our shared intuition that mankind is someday going to be called to account for the radical technological changes it has effected. To watch, now, "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" is to want to cry out in a darkened theater, "Enough already!" COME ON, HOLLYWOOD, let's get on to something else.

How about a series of movies where most things work right and people have to relate to each other. Wouldn't that be revolutionary? In the meantime, the doomsayers can look forward to "Meteor," yet another disaster picture scheduled to hit town next month. 'Hot Stuff MUCH BETTER THAN "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" but that's not saying much is "Hot Stuff," a light comedy about a police burglary unit that sets up a phony fencing operation for stolen goods to get some convictions that will stick. The cops are about to lose their federal funding unless they can put some crooks behind, bars. Grin and bare it.
