12 Section 3 Chicago Tribune. Wednesday, December 12. 1979 Wll CTCE W3 UBS. mm. (A 'Mr.

Mike' stages sick, stupid, short show 1 vh Mi if has been staged by O'Donoghue and staged badly. What is most arrogant about the film is that it has been transferred directly from videotape to film and runs only 60 minutes, including title cards that call for insertion of commercials. You will feel ripped off in quality and in running time. There are, however, a couple of amusing bits: a genuine 1928 skin flick called "Uncle Si and His a videotape of the late punk-rocker Sid Vicious singing "My and a revival meeting of the Church of the Perfect Wave, whose god is Jack Lord (get it) of "Hawaii Five-O." The good stuff, however, is overwhelmed by drivel, and the participation of the "Saturday Night Live" cast is limited to three short sketches. Rating for "Mf.

Mike's Mondo Video" at neighborhood theaters: 1 star. Night Live." His best known piece is an imitation of Elvis Presley having been stabbed in the eye with a knitting needle. O'Donoghue performed the stunt himself, rolling around on the stage, yelping with pain. That' may be sick, but it's inspired compared with the the material in "Mr. Mike's Mondo Video," a TV parody of "Mondo Cane," the '60s Italian documentary of worldwide grotesqueries.

THE FILM IS episodic, featuring an assortment of weirdnesses beginning with an Amsterdam-based swimming school for kittens. What you see is a couple of furry cats thrown into a pool swim to safety in slow motion. The idea may be funny, but it looks terrible. And the film concludes with a bunch of African natives praying on a beach to a huge sand castle bedecked with Lava Lites. Needless to say, this material By Gene Siskel Movie critic THIS IS THE SHOW that reportedly was "too hot to handle" for the NBC censors, so the network dropped it, and Its creator former "Saturday Night Live" writer Michael O'Donoghue picked it up and turned it into a feature film.

But O'Donoghue's "Mr. Mike's Mondo Video" is one case in which the television network is right, and the embattled performer is wrong. Truly wrong. And wrong not only on the basis of its audience suitability but also on the more important basis of the film's sense of humor. This is one sick and stupid show.

Fans of "Saturday Night Live" will recognize the balding, bespectacled O'Donoghue as responsible for some of the more demented material on "Saturday 3i 14 1 i ,1 I There's no reason why you can't do your holiday shopping on magnificent Michigan Avenue or lt COINS I COINS IN5 COINS i in an mi II i JAKE'S INFORMATION CENTER THE SILVER GOLD BUYERS now three locations to serve you GRAF COINS or The Fantasy Weekend Includes all this.
