.2 Section 1 Chicago Tribune, Friday. October 2, 1931 insane lolling nearly 30 years, stabbed to death with a pair of scissors. DeWit's case had become something of a battle of psychiatrists by the end of the trial. Jurors heard the opinions of three psychiatrists who had examined the unemployed actor: Two had diagnosed DeWit as a paranoid schizophrenic who suffered from paranoid delusions that everyone, including his own mother, was out to kill him. Tbey said DeWit believed Clarke was a Mafia figure who wanted to kill him and destroy his career.

They said DeWit was insane at the time. A third psychiatrist took issue with their opinions and said it was his opinion that DeWit knew precisely what he was doing and that "no mental Illness existed." "IF IT WAS UP to the psychiatrists, we wouldn't need a judge or a jury at all," prosecutor Michael Goggin told the Jury. "We'd all be confused." Judge Cieslik will sentence DeWit on Oct. 28. He will receive at least the minimum sentence for murder, which is 20 years, but will be required under the new law to serve his time in a mental facility until he is "cured." He then would be to prison for he remainder of his time.

By Bonita Brodt PAUL DeWIT, a 22-year-old drama stu-dent, was found "guilty but mentally 111" Thursday of murdering his acting coach, radio actor Everett Clarke, last year. A criminal court jury deliberated nearly six hours before reaching the verdict, was in effect a compromise between finding DeWit guilty of murder and acquitting him of the slaying by reason of insanity. It was the first time this new verdict has been reached in Cook County since It became an option in criminal cases under a new Illinois law that is only two weeks old. DeWit's defense attorney, Lorna Pro pes, did not deny that DeWit murdered Clarke in his lOth-floor studio in the Fine Arts Building, 410 S. Michigan on September 9, 1980.

At issue during this nine-day trial in the courtroom of Judge Arthur J. Cieslik was DeWit's mental state at the time. Pro pes had asked the jury to find DeWit innocent of the murder because he was insane at the time. CLARKE, 68, WAS a noted actor in old-time radio mysteries and once was the radio voice of "The Whistler." He was found lying on the stage of the studio where he had taught acting lessons for House votes rollback int milk subsidy WASHINGTON (AP-The House late Thursday over, whelmingly voted to roll back a per cent increase in dairy price supports that would cost the government more than $1 million a day and trigger consumer price increases. The vote was 328 to 58.

"It seems worthwhile to save this money since it teems the intent of Congress to pass a lower price support level," Rep. Richard Boiling Mo.) said. The Senate, which has adjourned until next week, must approve the bill before the price the government pays to support milk can be returned to $13.10 a hundred pounds. THE PRICE support level was automatically Increased Thursday to $13.49 per hundred pounds because Congress has yet to approve commodity support programs to replace those that expired at midnight Wednesday. "Without this legislation, the price of milk for the consumer will go up," Rep.

Delbert Latta Ohio) said. Even without the special bill, the support increase had been expected to last only a few weeks at most before being rolled back by the new farm bill. Officials said any increase for any length of time could give retailers, who have seen their profit margins erode in the last year, a reason to increase consumer prices and keep them there even after the higher support price ends. ANALYSTS AT the Agriculture Department estimate that the higher support level would add an extra $7 million to $10 million a week to the government's price support costs until the new farm bill is passed. The Senate has approved a new dairy price support program that would retain the $13.10 support level for at least one more year and probably longer.

The House, which will consider dairy supports next week, is expected to adopt a plan along the same lines. The dairy support program, the most expensive commodity support program run by the federal government, i I. "I didn't think I'd have hands again until a few days ago when they had me move my fingers." May said the surgical procedures for reattaching severed limbs have become commonplace the last few years. He estimated surgeons at his hospital perform an average of one replant operation a week. BOSTON (AP)-Seven ringers severed from the hands of a 21-year-old man by an iron press were successfully reattached in a two-day "surgical marathon" that involved 44 doctors, nurses, and technicians, hospital officials announced Thursday. Dr. James W.

May who headed the Massachusetts General Hospital surgical team, said he believed the operation marked the first time surgeons have been able to replace that many fingers. He also said the 46V hours was the longest a patient had been under general anesthesia at Massachusetts General. 'The reason for reporting this case is that surgeons in general and the public in general must be made aware that this AP lascphoio Beirut blast kills 60 has been a major budget-cutting target of President Reagan since he took office. High support levels in recent years have caused huge jumps in government costs while farmers have increased production and consumers have decreased consumption. It was pressure from the President that forced congressional approval of legislation blocking a support increase last spring and that won the votes in the Senate to freeze supports at current levels for the near future.
