The praise will culminate April 14 when Field is expected to be named Best Actress at the 52d Academy Awards show. But there is another current cinematic portrayal of a young Southern woman that is worth noting. It's Sissy Spacek's extraordinary portrait of country singing star Loretta Lynn in "Coal Miner's Daughter." (I was out of town when it opened; this is my attempt to catch up with the film and add my praise.) It may be onerous to compare performances, but I prefer Spacek's to Field's, who was simply required to play a shy girl who becomes a fearless labor organizer.

From timidity to strength Field did it well, but that's about all her role required. Before the movie began she had our rooting interest because we "all know she's cute as a button and is Burt Reynolds' girlfriend. Spacek has no such connection with the general audience. Most people don't know her, although they may have been moved by her performances in "Badlands," "Carrie," "Three Women," and "Heart Beat." What Spacek is required to do in "Coal Miner Daughter" is, first, convince us in the opening sequences that she's a 13-year-old innocent; second, become a struggling country singer; third, become a star; fourth, have a breakdown; and then, fifth, regain her hold on her personal and professional lives. The role is a genuine roller coaster, and Spacek is equal to its every turn.

In a recent Tribune interview, the 29-year-old actress revealed the secret of her ability to play teen-agers. "For me," she said, "cre: ating the illusion of someone young is more a matter of body movement than physical looks. It's running from point A to point instead of walking." And if you see "Coal Miner's Daughter," you will see in its opening sequences how she convinces us of her youth by moving herky-jerky everywhere with legs set widely apart. But she did that before in "Carrie." What is more remarkable in "Coal Miner's Daughter" 4s the way Spacek uncomfortably assumes the mantle of power as "the first lady of country music," following the death of the legendary Patsy Cline, who served as Loretta Lynn's mentor and Mend. In the film, Spacek, lying in bed, hears on the radio of her friend's death.

Her response is to give us that same frightened stare she created earlier in the film when she learns of her fathers- death. The little girl is growing up, adversity by adversity. Her accent is believable, not full of corn pone, as Field's is in "Norma Rae." We don't so much root for Spacek as sit back and watch her tell us what happened. She's as much in control of this film as is her director. AH of which is crucial because "Coal Miner's Daughter" at its core is pretty much your standard Hollywood show-biz biography: Subject conquers adversity, achieves success, and battles against the dark side of success. So why doesn't it seem trite? The film's success is due first and foremost toi Spacek, followed by superb location photography by Ralph Bode "Saturday Night and a couple of exceptional supporting performances namely, Tommy Lee Jones as Loretta's hard-driving husband Mooney and Beverly D'Angelo, equally compelling as Patsy Cline. But it's Spacek who holds center stage.

Even though we know how this story is going to turn out, she holds bur attention, whether playing Lynn as a put-upon youngster or as a put-upon adult. This is the first great performance of the '80s from an actress who has become a major talent.
