IF YOU'SPEND 50 cents for magazines you see her frequently, li you spend, enough time around mid-Manhattan you see her even more frequently. She is slim and lovely and has the cool remoteness oJ the very beautiful.

Last month, just in'time to judge some loving you saw her in four colors wearing $25,000 'mutation mink, coat and a $150,000" diamond necklace, Women from to Cali fornia, drudging in--their kitchens, saw the picture--and hated her. What you -saw In the slick, smooth magazine was a full page picture of an overwhelming girl, and the picture was shot by a. celebrated photographer. And in all that lushness that caught your eye, quickest was the wink from a pair of tiny diamond ear-bobs. This is the story of the wink.

IT WAS the morn- inr. The art director of the magazine was fuming. She had told the model to be there at promptly. So beautiful and so useless, she raced, all of them. As she stormed up and down, the door opened -and a shy, nervous little man walked in bearing large cardboard box.

It said: "Mm Kruml'c Danish Pastry" on the side. Behind walked two men in fray uniforms with honest guns slunf in holsters on their hips. They never took their eyes off the little man. "You rot the skins?" screamed the art director. "I got the skins," said the little man, and lifted thr top from the box.

Nestled in it lay $25,000 worth of fur coat. The uniforms edged in closer. The door opened again and another gray uniform walked in, followed by a tall, slim man who kept his head nervously. Still another gun-bearing uniform came in behind him. "YOU GOT the art director said tensely.

"In my pocket," said the thin man. The gray uniforms closed in tight around him as he fished a small box from his coat pocket, opened it and showed the gems. The door opened and a girl walked in. "This is the art director cried sharply. "I wouldn't know, darling," cooed the model.

"I didn't get a watch for my birthday." "It's snapped the art director. "HOW it," said the model and went into a. small room. The art director, the two men, the four uniforms crowd- eft in, then backed out. In a moment she came out; She embraced by the furs and the diamonds gleamed at her throat like frozen ice.

The photographer took her to a chair, posed her by it, brusquely moved her hands, her.arms. stood artificially poised and distant. "Get to thinking about how much you owe the Morris Plan," he rasped. The girl looked startled, then sullen. Wonderfully sullen.

And the lens snapped. Before it was over, it snapped nine times. "Got it," said the photographer. "Fine," said the art director. "Take it off, June." THE back to her cubicle.

The gray uniforms and the two men huddled out- tide the door. In a moment the necklace was thrust out in a white hand. and. then the fur coat. The two men said, "Thank you." and left.

The uniforms followed them, right hands near the guns. The model came out and the! art director screamed. "What are those rhinesiones doing on your ears?" she shrieked. "What do'rhinesiones usually my ears?" the model said languidly. "Thev sleep there!" "Did you have those ch for the pictures?" the art director cried.

Menzel of Harvard University told a meeting of astronomers. Addressing the Royal Astronomical Society, Dr. Menzel elaborated on his studiei of planetary atmospheres.

"We, have long known that water, is; scarce on Mars," he said. "Unlike the earth, where only a minute fraction of the available moisture occurs as atmospheric vapor, Man hai a very sizeable fraction of its moisture in atmosphere. Even 10 the' humidity is extremely low--less than one tenth of one percent, on the average." The professor laid the polar caps of Mars are great "blocks of ice, but mere fields of hoar frost, ice cryitals like those on a window pane or in the freezing compartment of an electric refrigerator." ICE NOT THICK Their thickness, he said, probably it only a fraction of an inch and, during the long Martian summer, the frost caps slowly evaporate, without melting. About twenty five years ago Dr. William H.

Wright of Lick Observatory noted that photographs Mars, taken in blue ight, appeared to be larger than those taken in red light. Dr. Menzel showed that a thin aver- of dry ice-snow, formed some, sixty miles above the surface of. the planet, could account Wright's observations. Ah observer on the surface of.
