Chicago Tribune, Thursday, February 12. 1981 Sections. 19 McCORMAC 6I8B0NS KASFtOWTCZ FARMAN STRANSKY Death notices Dominick DiMatteo, i grocery pioneer, A PRIVATE MASS for Dominick DiMatteo, 87, founder of Dominick Finer Food Stores, which eventually became the Chicago area's second largest retail grocery chain, will be held at a.m. Friday at Queen of All Saints Basilica, 6280 N. Sauganash Av.

Mr. DiMatteo died Monday in St. Pet-, ersburg, where he resided. Mr. DiMatteo emigrated from Italy in 1909 and operated several food stores in Chicago in the 1920s.

But the store he opened at Ohio Street and Avers Avenue marked the beginning of the Dominick's chain, which now has 72 stores in the six-county area. Mr. DiMatteo retired in 1959. He is survived by his wife, Hortense; a daughter, Christine Ciaccio; a son, Dominick chairman the food Chain; 10 grandchildren; and IS greatgrandchildren. Ex-scout for Black Hawks dies keeper for the Boston Bruins and the Detroit Red Wings.

In his career with the Bruins, he received the Vezina Trophy as the league's best goalie in 1930, 1933, 1936, and 1938. IN 1933, HE held the Toronto Maple Leafs scoreless for 104 minutes and 46 seconds before Toronto finally won the game, 1 to 0. His last two playing years were with Detroit. Mr. Thompson was en all-star twice while playing for Boston.

His brother, Paul, was an all-star forward for the Hawks in the 1930s. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Jacques Funeral Home, 240 17th Av. S.W., Calgary. SERVICES FOR Cecil "Tiny" Thomp-v son, 76, veteran scout for the Chicago Black Hawks and former all-star National Hockey League goalie will be held Thursday in Calgary, Alberta.

Mr. Thompson died Monday in Calgary after shoveling snow at his home. "He went in the house and had a bite to eat and then took a nap" and died in his sleep, a Black Hawks spokesman said. He was a scout for the Chicago team from 1945 to 1977. Among the players he were Hawks' coach Keith Magnuson and assistant coach Cliff Ko-sroll, two of the proteges of whom he was proudest.

Mr. Thompson formerly was a goal L. L. Smith, ex-Indiana LOGANSPORT, Ind. API Services for Lei and L.

72, a former Indi- ana secretary of state and father-in-law of state treasurer Julian Rldlenwill, will be held Thursday here. Smith, who died Tuesday in a Logans-port nursing home, was Cass County Republican chairman for 30 years the longest for anyone to hold such a post in the state. He was elected first in 1938 and was re-elected 15 times. He served as secretary of state from 1950-52 and was defeated in the GOP primary in the gubernatorial race by George Craig, who went on to win the general election. SMITH WAS mayor of Logansport in 1947 and served as city attorney under four mayors.

He also was Cass County attorney for several years. His father, JohnB. Smith, was a longtime' circuit judge. i. Survivors include his widow, Wflma; a daughter; a son; a brother; two sisters; and two grandchildren.
