Kaplan, of 1518 W. Touhy died Wednesday in Michael Reese hospital. He was a superintendent for the city for many years in the 24th Ward and later in the 48th Ward. He had been a Democratic precinct captain in the 24th Ward for 35 years. Surviving are his wife, Eva; a daughter, Mrs.

Myrna Cloch; a son, Leonard; five grandchildren; a sister; and a brother. William J. Torpy Sr. Mass for William J. Torpy a retired battalion chief with the Chicago Fire Department, will be at 10 a.m.

Friday in Christ the King Catholic Church, 9235 S. Hamilton Av. Mr. Torpy, 88, who retired from the department in 1946, died Tuesday in a Palatine retirement borne, where he lived. He was active in the 18th Ward Regular Democratic Organization.

He is survived by two sons, William and Richard; 13 grandchildren: and a great-grandchild. Eugene Richards Sr. Services for Eugene Richards 90, a Chicago-area porter since 1917, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the chapel at 2100 E. 75th St.

Mr. Richards, of 4743 Champlain died Tuesday in the University of Illinois Medical Center. He is survived by two sons, Eugene Jr. and Charles; four grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a brother. Joseph J.

Bezdek Mass for Joseph J. Bezdek, 67, of 2246 Wilmette Wilmette, a florist, will be said at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1747 Lake in the suburb. Mr.

Bezdek died Wednesday in St. Francis Hospital, Evanston. Until 1968 he operated a greenhouse behind his home. Until his death he was a co-owner of Edward's Florists at 719 Willow Winnetka. Survivors include his wife, Susan; four sons, Joseph Thomas, Greg, and Jerry; two daughters, Marjorie and Mrs.

Roberta Cunningham; two sisters; and four grandchildren. Harold I. Tevnan Mass for Harold I. Tevnan, 92, a lifetime Chicago resident, will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in St.

Gertrude's Catholic Church, 1420 W. Granville Av. Mr. Tevnan, who died Thursday in Edgewater Hospital, was an insurance broker for 65 years at United States Fidelity Guaranty 170 W. Jackson until he retired at age 87.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Kavannaugh; two grandchildren; and seven The Rev. Harold V. Devereim The Rev. Harold V.

Devereaux, ad-" ministrator of St. Joseph Parish in Ca-bery, 111., died Thursday at his residence at St. Joseph Church there. Father Devereaux, 66, a priest for 37 years, was born in Kankakee. He was graduated from St.

Ambrose College, Davenport, in 1940; ordained at Kenrick Seminary, St. Louis, in 1943; and received a master's degree in psychology from Fordham University, New York, in 1945. He taught at St. Joseph's Academy in La an St. Joseph's School for the Deaf in New York; Archbishop Stepinae High School in White Plains, N.Y., and Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, where he was principal from 1956-1962.

His parish assignments were St. Viator in Chicago, 1953-56; and St. Viator in Las Vegas, 1962-63. He was pastor of Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church In Bourbonnais, 111., from 1968 to 1977, taking the St. Joseph post in 1977.

He is survived by a brother and two sisters. There will be two masses: the first will be 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph in Cabery; the second will be 11 a.m. Monday in Maternity Church, 308 Marsile Bourbonnais.

Leo Ryan Leo "Pat" Ryan, 64, father of Lake County State's Atty. Dennis Ryan, died Thursday in his home in Libertyville. He was a retired shipping manager for an electronics firm. Also surviving are his wife, Carol; three other sons, Gary, Richard, and Michael; and five grandchildren. Mass will be at 9:30 a.m.

Saturday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple Libertyville. Mrs, Hortense Lapham A memorial service for Hortense Sheffield Lapham, 92, a longtime resident of La Grange, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Emmanuel Episcopal Church, La Grange.

Mrs. Lapham died May 2 in Boulder, where she had lived for the last five years. Her late husband, Edward Burnham Lapham, was founder of Lapham Hickey Steel Co. in Chicago. Mrs.

Lapham grew up in Evanston, the daughter of William Townsend Sheffield and Nell Underwood. Her forebearers were participants in the Revolutionary War and the early politics of Connecticut, New York, and Illinois. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Patricia L. Hall; two sisters; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
