Frank McHugh. .83, the stalwart supporting actor best known for his roles in scores of motion pictiTii, has died in Greenwich Hospital after a short illness. McHugh, who died Friday, had lived in Cos Cob, Conn. His round visage and spunky snicker made him a featured player for -more than half a century in vaudeville, theater, movies, and television.

He played Quince, the clown, in the Max Reinhardt and William Dieterle film version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in 1935. He also appeared in important roles in such films as "The Fighting 63th" with James Cagney and Pat O'Brien, two stars with whom he was frequently cast, and "Going My Way," with Bing Crosby, on whose radio and television series he often appeared. The following year he appeared in "Excess Baggage," which he considered his "best New York role." It was his last Broadway appearance until 1963 when he appeared as Senex, the henpecked husband, In "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." FROM THE LATE 1920s through World War II, McHugh was a tireless performer in Hollywood, appearing in 14 productions in one year alone.

A private funeral service will be held Tuesday in West Hartford, Conn. Italian poet Montale dies; won Nobel Prize in 1975 Eugenio Montale Italian poet won Nobel Prize for Literature in 1975.

Leuliemia victim, known for poetry, 12, dies; courage Lawk From Tribune Wire Services MILAN, Italy Poet Eugenio Montale, 84, who won the 1975 Nobel Prize for Literature, died of a heart ailment Saturday night at San Pio hospital. When he was named the prize winner, Montale was acclaimed by the Swedish Academy as "one of the most important poets of the contemporary West" even though he had published only five books in 50 years, an output academy called modest and not easy to understand. Montale had said that poetry should express more than the words themselves convey and that no poet should aim merely to be understood. Of his own work, he said: "My poetry cannot be understood as a message but as an invitation to hope." THE LONGTIME literary and music critic for the Milan newspaper Corriere della Sera, Montale was praised by the academy for his interpretation of human values through "an outlook on life with no illusions." Despite the acclaim he won as a poet, he preferred to call his profession journalism, not poetry. Montale was born in Genoa on Oct.

12, 1896. At 15, he convinced his merchant family that he wanted to be a singer and began studying with a noted baritone. But his studies soon ended when his teacher died and he was called up to serve as an infantry officer during World War I. His first poems were published in 1917. In 1921, he became literary critic for the Turin magazine Primo Tempo, which had published some of those early works.

SERVICES FOR Jeffery Howard Wexler, a 12-year-old leukemia' victim who amazed his doctors and nurses with his courage and his poetry while receiving continuous treatment for his disease, -will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Temple Anshe Sholom. Jeffery, who had leukemia for 4Va years, died Friday at Children's Memorial Hospital. He had been a patient there for three weeks following neurosurgery. Throughout his many stays at Children's, Jeffery became known as an "incredible fighter." Although his treatments for the disease made him weak, he managed to put the disease in remission several times and live something of a normal life.

DURING HIS time in the hospital, Jeffery drew pictures and wrote-poetry that greatly impressed doctors and nurses. Jeffery learned to ski last winter, and his parents took him to Colorado and Wisconsin on ski trips. ''He was a fighter," said his mother, Charlene. "He managed to take advantage of everything. He lived every day." When he was able, Jeffery attended Brookwood Intermediate School in Glen-wood, where his family lives.

Besides his mother, Jeffery is survived by his father, Dr. Samuel, a dentist; a brother, Michael; and grandparents. IN 1925, AT THE age of 29, Montale published "Bones of the Cuttlefish," his first major volume of poetry. It showed his love for the coastal area of northwestern Italy. In 1928, he moved to Florence, working first in a publishing house and then as head of the Gabinetto Vieusseux Library.

He lost his job 10 years later for refusing to join the Fascist Party. The next year, in 1939, he published his second volume of poetry, "The Occasions." In 1948, Montale moved to Milan to take a job with Corriere della Sera. That year, he also published his third major work, "The Storm and Other Things." The other two major books of poetry by Montale are "Satura," published in 1962, and "Dario de '71 '72" in 1973. Montale has also published prose, collections of his newspaper articles, and translations into Italian of writers as diverse as Shakespeare and Dorothy Parker. (APHHelen Humes, a jazz singer whose star rose and fell for decades before burning its brightest in the mid-1970s, has died at the age of 68. Humes, who died of cancer last Wednesday at a convalescent home here, reached her first peak singing with the Count Basie orchestra between 1938 and 1942, then reached another height in 1945 with her first hit single, "Be-baba-leba." But her career dimmed after World War II, and she retired in 1967, then emerged as a brighter-than-ever jazz light at the 1973 Newport Jazz Festival. She was IS when she cut her first record in St. Louis.

She recorded with Harry James' orchestra in 1938 before joining Basie's group. HER WORK WITH Basie "showed her to be a superior ballad singer with jazz inflections," according to the Encyclopedia of Jazz, but that compendium said her subsequent style was "a more commonplace blues-shouting technique." "Fortunately, she returned to a jazz context in the late 1950s," the encyclopedia said, when she toured Australia with the Red Norvo trio, appeared in Hollywood clubs, and performed in the play "Simply Heavenly."
