0.6 ir.g. nicotine Nevada LasVegas DF YOU SAW Robert Altman's "The Long Goodbye" on television a couple of Sunday nights ago, you witnessed a stunning example of TV's maddening compulsion to transform everything it touches into a piece of sausage. Of course, if you hadn't seen the movie previously at a' theater and therefore were watching it for the first you had no idea that you had been played for a sucker. Without getting into a complete review of "The Long suffice to say that it's a moody but thought-provoking film based on a Raymond Chandler novel about private eye Philip Marlowe. Elliott Gould plays Marlowe with laconic ease, and there's a nice supporting performance by Henry Gibson.

The movie ends with Marlowe shooting and killing the slimy opportunist who betrayed him under the guise of friendship. BUT THAT'S not the way it played on the "ABC Sunday Night Movie. Viewers who had invested two hours instead saw Marlowe confront his adversary and pull out a gun. Then they saw a closeup of Marlowe's face. At that point, ABC ended the film.

There was no shooting and no body. Thus, in what might have been TV's most outrageous "truth-in-packaging" violation, ABC actually changed the ending of a fine movie. In so doing, the network wiped out the whole point of the story, not to mention the ironic climax that director Altman had been building up to. The ABC censors defend their hatchet job by explaining that they ruled out Marlowe's sudden act of homicide because the movie provided "no retribution" for the killing. In other words, Marlowe got away with it in the original film, and even though the adversary was a murderer himself, ABC felt the lack of punishment for Marlowe's dirty deeds somehow would put networks in the position of advocating vigilantism.

THAT'S PRETTY tortured logic. But even if you accept the explanation, the question is: If ABC executives are so concerned about being identified with a movie that supposedly advocates taking the law into your own hands, why in hell did they buy "The Long Goodbye" in the first place? I'll give you the answer to that one: ABC purchased "The Long Goodbye" not for its value as entertainment or cinematic art, but rather for its "marquee value." The network knew the movie had a good reputation, and therefore that it might attract a fairly large TV audi- ence. But once ABC enticed its "customers" to tune in the movie, the network couldn't have cared less about delivering on its promise that is, living up to the title. Besides, with the main censorial butchery being committed at the very end of the film, there's not much the home audience can do about it. Or, to put it even more bluntly, how does a television viewer demand a refund? ACTUALLY, THIS latest example of crude ABC censorship further points up an amazing form-reversal that's taking place at that network.

For many years, ABC was the most sadistic and exploitative network when it came to dishing out unnecessarily violent programs that appealed to vicarious-thrill seekers. Now that it suddenly has become fashionable to be against TV violence, ABC is wiping out even realistic violence that's properly motivated by the plots, as in "The Long Goodbye." The result, however, remains the same: bad television almost totally predicated on a fantasy world. Included: Jet Round Trip -Open Bar Meats A Days Hotel Translers Handling 2 Meals a Day Nickels 24 Lucky Bucks Drinks Bingo Cards Keno Ticket Tax Tips Ask about Shows Elliott Gould: In case you missed it, he got to kill the bad guy, but not on TV. Forgetting the violence issue for a'moment, the most heartbreaking aspect of ABC's treatment of "The Long Goodbye" is that network's continuing disrespect for outstanding movies, and for the physical and emotional effort that goes into making such films. CBS AND NBC certainly have performed their share of mutilation in the editing of theatrical movies for TV telecast.

(In 1972, CBS scissored 36 minutes from Luchino Visconti's "The Damned." Last season, CBS' blue-noses severly damaged "Smile," the Michael Ritchie movie about beauty pageants.) But ABC still is the all-time champion in the Silly Censor Sweepstakes. A few highlights from the network's past-performance charts: Led by chief censor Al Schneider, ABC hatcheted "Midnight Cowboy" into incoherence. Among other things, the network removed all traces of homosexuality, thus rendering the home audience oblivious to a crucial ingredient of the story. Jan lost nearly one-third of its footage when ABC telecast it as a "Bicentennial special" on 4th of July weekend last year ABC this month planned to repeat "Katherine," a made-for-TV movie about a girl who becomes a violent political radical. ABC wanted to trim the original two-hour film into a 90-minute time-slot.

The movie's director heard about it and raised a fuss. ABC hastily canceled the rerun. And on it goes. The networks, particularly ABC, have an astonishing lack of respect for the artistic accomplishment of filmmakers. Judging from their casual explanations for their brutal editing, they don't think too highly of us viewers, either.
